Abstract

1441856 Nuclear reactor containments COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 25 June 1974 [26 June 1973] 28139/74 Heading G6C In a fast reactor cooled by liquid sodium 4 contained in a main vessel 3 which is spaced from a surrounding safety vessel 6, upper parts 18, 19 of the vessels' walls are protected by a thermal insulation structure disposed between opposed faces of the wall parts 18, 19 and secured by a metal plate, and by a collar 29 adjacent the the inner surface of the vessel 3 in the region of of its upper wall part 18, the lower end portion of the collar 29 being immersed in the coolant. In the embodiment shown, the thermal insulation structure is constituted by metal mesh 22 and the retaining plate 21 comprises individual portions 21a-21f secured to the wall parts 18, 19 (which are of increased thickness compared with lower parts of the walls) by studs 23 fitted with caps 24. A closure slab 9 is similarly thermally insulated. The space 20 between the vessels 3, 6 contains nitrogen. In another embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) the collar (29) is similarly insulated and the space between the vessels 3, 6 is divided into lower and upper portions (20, 20a) by a plate (33) and a collar (37), similar thermal insulation being retained between the plate (33) and collar (37). Some of the mesh in the upper portion (20a) rests on an abutment (32) on a further collar (30) which replaces the retaining plate of the previous embodiment.
