Abstract

[Also in Division F4] In a nuclear fuel transfer container, cooling is effected by natural convection. The fuel assembly, 11, is lodged in the container, 10, immersed in the liquid sodium, 15. The chimney, 14, arranged coaxially round the fuel facilitates a vertical convection coolant flow so as to dissipate heat from the fuel through the wall, 10A. The convection effect may be increased by forming 14 of two concentric steel cylinders the interspace between which contains an inert gas at low pressure to provide a thermally insulating partition. Alternatively, 14 may be of a refractory ceramic.
