Abstract

1,196,336. Thermal storage apparatus. HCH. BERTRAMS A.G. 27 Nov., 1967 [7 Dec., 1966; 24 June, 1967], No. 53763/67. Heading F4U. Heat is transferred from heat storage apparatus employing an eutectic mixture of salts as the storage medium to water flowing in a heating system via an intermediate heat transfer fluid. As shown, the eutectic 2 fills a container 1 provided with vertical tubes 3 extending between lower and upper compartments 4, 5. Before the eutectic is heated by electric heating elements 10, the tubes 3 and compartments 4, 5 are filled with water so that during heating steam is generated and water is forced out of compartment 4 through pipe 7 into an expansion vessel. Water in a central heating system is circulated through a coil 6 in compartment 5 and steam is condensed on the coil, the condensate being collected in compartment 4. Container 1 may be surrounded by, and spaced from, a casing, the gap between the casing and container communicating with the upper and lower compartments (Fig. 3, not shown). The gap may alternatively replace the tubes 3 and a plurality of eutectic containers may be assembled to form a battery (Figs. 4 to 6, not shown). In a further embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown), the steam generated in the casing surrounding the eutectic container is circulated through an external heat exchanger, the rate of circulation being valve-controlled in accordance with the requirements of the central heating system.
