Abstract
936,541. Hot water supply systems. C. H. HOARE. Aug. 7, 1962 [Aug. 10, 1961], No. 28910/61. Class 64 (1). In apparatus of the indirect type for supplying hot water for space heating and other purposes the calorifier located in the hot water storage cylinder A which is supplied with cold water from a cistern A<SP>1</SP> consists of an opentopped cylindrical vessel B connected about midway between its ends by a flow pipe b and near its bottom by a return pipe b<SP>1</SP> with a heat source, e.g. a boiler (not shown). A combined vent pipe and hot water draw-off pipe C, C<SP>1</SP> enters the dome of the cylinder A to terminate outside of and a short distance below the open upper end of the vessel B. When the system is filled water from the cylinder A overflows into the vessel B filling the primary system to a level determined by a primary vent pipe C<SP>2</SP>, air being trapped in the upper part of the vessel and the dome of the cylinder A. On heating the primary water expands so as substantially to fill the vessel, as shown in the Figure, the primary water still being isolated from the secondary water, however, by the trapped air which depresses the level in the cylinder A to the level of the lower end of the vent pipe C. Hot primary water entering the vessel B through the pipe b circulates upwardly and then downwardly in the vessel before discharging through the pipe b<SP>1</SP> so that the secondary water is heated in contact with substantially the whole of the outer surface of the vessel. Radiator flow and return pipes C<SP>3</SP>, C<SP>4</SP> branch from the pipes C<SP>2</SP>, b<SP>1</SP> respectively. Above the vessel B the dome of the cylinder A is provided with a boss a<SP>2</SP> having a cover which may be removed for descaling the calorifier.
