Abstract
1296992 Water heating systems ELECTRICITY COUNCIL 19 June 1970 14730/69 Heading F4U A water heating system comprises a thermal storage core 10 with means for heating the core to a temperature above the boiling point of water, a water-containing vessel 9 above the bore and at least one passage 12 extending from the vessel into the core, the passage extending upwardly in the vessel into a cap 15 and having a steam opening and a water feed hole 14 positioned below the steam opening, so that steam pressure developed in the cap by evaporation of water within the passage forces the water level in the cap outside the passage down below the feed hole. The water in the vessel may be drawn off directly as hot water, but preferably it is used indirectly by heating further water using a heat exchanger, e.g. by heating water in a jacket round the vessel. Venting means may be provided to vent excessive steam pressure within the cap; the venting means being in the form of a surge tank with an air lock, the said air lock preventing mixing of the circulating water and the water to be heated (see Fig. 2, not shown). A pin hole 13 can be provided in the steam space to allow air within the cap to escape in order to prevent an air lock forming. To reduce oscillations of the water level, a reservoir may be provided around the passage, the reservoir having a second feed hole (27) for feeding water into said reservoir.
