Abstract

1,104,789. Reactors. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. 29 Nov., 1965 [28 Nov., 1964], No. 50649/65. Heading G6C. An integrated pressurized water reactor has a generally spherical pressure vessel containing heat exchange elements encircling a generally cylindrical space and extending between the top and bottom of the space, a reactor core disposed in the lower end of the space, and a pressurizer having a shell open at its lower end, means for heating water in the shell and means for cooling vapour in the shell, the lower end of the shell projecting into the cylindrical space and lying below the water level in the pressure vessel. In the embodiment described, the shell is in the form of a cylindrical drum 8 having a flange 8a at its upper end which is clamped between the body and the cap 2b of the pressure vessel 2. The reactor core 1 is encircled by a shielding 3 and in the space between the shielding 3 and the pressure vessel 2 are steam generating tube banks 4. The tube banks 4 are contained within a casing 5 and immersed in water reaching to the level 6. The water is circulated by means of pumps 7. The vapour pressure in the pressurizer space above the water level 6 in the drum 8 is controlled by means of electrically heated immersion elements 10 disposed on a circle near the periphery of the drum 8 beneath the water level 6 and a spray device 11 disposed above the water level 6 so that cold water may be sprayed into the pressurizer space. By suitable operation of the pressurizer, steam bubble formation in the core may be limited although some steam bubble formation can still occur and thus may be useful in providing some automatic control of the operation of the reactor..
