Abstract

965,147. Vertical steam boilers. MASCHINENBAU-A.G. BALCKE. June 25, 1962, No. 24312/62. Heading F4A. A steam generator heated by a hot gas, steam or a liquid, especially a nuclear reactor coolant, e.g. heavy water, comprises an upright pressure vessel within which is coaxially located a downcomer tube 14 which passes through upper and lower headers 3, 10 which are connected by an annular bank of vertical tubes 8 surrounding the downcomer, the ends of the tubes being welded into the outer walls of the headers. The lower header is divided into four sections by vertical partitions. Two pipes 1 convey the heating medium into opposite sections of the lower header whence it flows upwardly in one half of the tubes 8 to the upper header and then downwardly in the remaining tubes to the other sections of the lower header to discharge through pipes 2. Water is admitted to the pressure vessel at 12 and evaporates as it rises past the tubes 8, steam discharging at 13 whilst unevaporated water returns to the bottom of the vessel through the downcomer tube 14. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the heating fluid is steam or a gas and is admitted to the upper header to flow downwardly in all of the tubes 8, cooled gas or condensate discharging from the lower header.
