Abstract

903,443. Forced-flow steam boilers. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Feb. 2, 1959 [Feb. 11, 1958], No. 4442/58. Class 123 (2). A steam generator heated by the coolant gas from a nuclear reactor comprises an upright cylindrical pressure-shell 1 within which is coaxially located an open-topped vessel 4, the vessel being suspended by interengaging flanges 7, 8 to leave an annular cavity 11 between the vessel and the pressure shell constituting a cooling . water jacket for the latter. Four headers 12 ... 15 extend into the vessel 4 from the removable end cap 2 of the pressure shell, the headers 13, 14, 15 being placed diametrically opposite the header 12. The latter is divided into upper and lower zones 16, 17 by spaced plates 18, the upper zone being connected with both the headers 13, 15 by sinuous tubes 21 forming the evaporator section 22 of the boiler. The lower zone 17 of the header 12 is connected by sinuous tubes 23 forming the boiler superheater section 24 to upper and lower zones 30, 31 of the header 14. In operation, hot gas enters the vessel 4 through a bottom inlet pipe 36 and flows upwardly through the tube banks to discharge through outlet pipes 40, 41. Feedwater is pumped into the jacket 11 and serves to cool the shell, the water discharging through a pipe 39 to a separator drum (not shown). Water flows from the drum through the headers 13, 15 and tubes 21. The steam-water mixture generated in these tubes enters the zone 16 of the header 12 and returns to the drum whence separated steam flows into the zone 30 of the header 14, through the superheater tubes 23 and the zone 31 of the header to discharge to the point of use through an outlet pipe 27.
