Abstract
1,115,354. Cooling reactors. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. 10 Aug., 1965 [11 Aug., 1964], No. 34165/65. Heading G6C. In a nuclear reactor, the core is mounted with steam generating and superheating heat exchangers within the pressure vessel. Water is pumped through the core outer zone and through the steam generating exchanger and is pressurized to prevent boiling. Steam from above the free water surface 'is pumped independently through the core centre where it is superheated. The superheated steam is circulated through the superheating heat exchanger where it raises the temperature of the steam produced in the steam generating exchanger. The superheater, being mounted in the steam atmosphere above the free water level, raises the temperature of the steam, there, by heat conduction through its outer surface, and therefore also the steam pressure above the boiling pressure at that temperature, so pressurizing the coolant water. The degree of superheat is adjusted by varying the circulation rates of steam and water. The core centre, being steam cooled, may be operated as a fast breeder reactor.
