1,092,536. Reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. May 11, 1965 [May 25, 1964], No. 21574/64. Heading G6C. In a gas-cooled reactor, the non-oxidizing coolant may, under fault conditions, be replaced by air and a fire initiated by oxidation of the graphite core, the fuel or fuel sheaths. This is prevented by the replacement of the coolant gas, by carbon dioxide, helium or nitrogen, when a fault occurs, so as to exclude air. The injection of the fire prevention gas into the reactor is effected automatically by the establishment of a negative pressure in the pressure vessel due to reactor cooling subsequent to the fault. A fire prevention gas heavier than air is used when injection into the core is through the upper surface and a lighter than air gas is used when injection is from below.
