Abstract
A corrosion inhibitory solution, for the cooling systems of combustion engines and effective in the presence of Al, Fe, Ni, Cr, Cu, Zn, Pb, Sn, Mg or alloys thereof, comprises, a) an alkali metal borate e.g. borax, b) an alkali metal silicate e.g. sodium metasilicate, c) a mercaptan or thioether e.g. mercaptobenzothiazole or dibutyl or dibenzyl sulphide, and d) an aldehyde e.g. crotonaldehyde or cinnamaldehyde, dissolved in an aqueous medium the pH of which is adjusted to 7-8.5 e.g. by adding NaOH. Anti-scaling properties may be imparted to the solution by adding a water-soluble cellulose ether, triglycolamidic acid or ethylene iminotetraacetic acid or salt thereof. Anti-foaming properties may be imparted to the solution by adding isomers of octyl alcohol. Glycol or other freezing point depressant may be added.
