Abstract

465,808. Preventing corrosion. THALHOFER, W. Nov. 15, 1935, No. 31717. [Class 123 (i)] In a method of preventing corrosion in steam condensers such as marine condensers, there is maintained in the cooling water, only during the periods when the rate of flow of the cooling water is reduced to zero, proportions of corrosion preventing chemicals. Examples of such chemicals are sodium hydroxide or carbonate or corresponding potassium or calcium compounds, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone, dextrose, laevulose, alkali metal and alkaline earth sulphites, bisulphites, and thiosulphites, and pickling inhibitors such as mono- or trihydroxy benzene suphonic acids. An alkaline corrosion preventing compound may alternatively be formed in the cooling sea-water by electrolysis thereof. When the condenser is at rest for considerable periods the corrosive cooling liquid is withdrawn and the condenser filled with fresh water to which anti-corrosive reagents are added.
