Abstract
574,129. Cooling internal-combustion engines. LITTLE, A. H., RIDGE, B. P., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 11, 1942, No. 3190. [Class 29] A non-corrosive liquid for use in the cooling systems of liquid-cooled internal-combustion engines comprises an aqueous solution of sodium formate containing a buffer liquid which maintains the liquid alkaline at a pH of 8 to 11 and an anti-corrosive agent effective at that pH. From 15 to 30 per cent. of sodium formate may be present. The anti-corrosive agent may be a chromate or dichromate of ammonium or an alkali metal and may be present in amount between 0.1 and 1.0 per cent. The buffer solution may be trisodium phosphate, sodium carbonate, borax, or a sesquicarbonate. When aluminium is present in the cooling system the pH of the liquid should be kept between 9 and 9.5. If desired the composition may also contain a lower aliphatic alcohol such as methanol, ethanol, glycol, or glycerol.
