Abstract

1,273,500. Corrosion inhibitors for antifreezes. R. M. HOLLGSHEAD CORP. 8 Oct., 1970 [27 March, 1970], No. 47857/70. Heading C4X. [Also in Division C7] A corrosion inhibitor for an aqueous internal combustion engine coolant comprises 1-50% by wt. of an ion exchange resin capable of removing calcium and magnesium from solution, 20-90% of an alkali metal metaborate, 0À01-1% of an acid indicator dye, and 0À1-10% of mercaptobenzothiazole, benzotriazole or tolutriazole. The ion exchange resin may be Amberlite IR- 120 or IR-124, Dowex 50-X8 or 50-X10, or Permutit Q ("Amberlite", "Dowex", and "Permutit" are R.T.M.'s), and the metaborate that of sodium. The coolant may also contain an anti-freeze e.g. alcohol or ethylene glycol, and optionally other inhibitors e.g. arsenites. The dye is chosen to indicate pH decrease to a value in the range 5À2-9À8 at the end of the useful life of the inhibitor.
