Abstract

Corrosion of metals in contact with water having bicarbonate hardness e.g. the cooling system of an I.C. engine is inhibited by dissolving in said water at least 0.03% of KNO2 or NaNO2, at least 0.02% of NaNO3 or KNO3, at least 0.05% of an alkali metal silicate (defined), at least 0.0125% of sodium mercaptobenzothiazole or of benzotriazole, and at least 0.004% of an anti-incrusting agent which is (1) a grafted polymer derived from starch and acrylonitrile, or starch and acrylamide, or a starch ether and acrylonitrile, or a starch ether and acrylamide or from polyvinyl alcohol and acrylonitrile or from polyvinyl alcohol and acrylamide (ii) the products obtained by partially hydrolyzing said grafted polymers (iii) sodium or potassium salts of said products or (iv) sodium or potassium polyacrylates. The alkali metal silicate is defined as having the formula M2O (SiO2)n where M is an alkali metal and n is greater than 1. Glycerol or glycols may also be added to the water as antifreeze agents.
