Abstract

1,036,926. Return tube steam or hot-water boilers. D. VANDAL. July 15, 1963 [Feb. 9, 1963], No. 27910/63. Heading F4A. A steam or hot water boiler comprises two return tube boiler units mounted back-to-back in a common shell, the boiler units being fired simultaneously or one being fired whilst the other acts as a standby unit. In the form shown a cylindrical shell 1 contains in its lower centre portion a transfer box 2 above which is disposed a smoke box 3. Lower sets of firetubes 4 connect the sides of the transfer box to respective end transfer chambers 5 from which respective sets of firetubes 6 convey gases into the smoke box 3, which has a discharge opening 7. Disposed below each set of firetubes 4 is a combustion chamber 8 provided with an oil burner 8 at the outer end and connected at its inner end to the transfer box 2. The burners may be used together or individually when the unused combustion chamber is closed by a cover plate 21. Water inlets and outlets 22, 23 are provided and internal circulation between the boiler units occurs through the space between the boxes 2, 3 and through large bore pipes 12 passing through the chamber 2.
