Abstract

A fire-tube boiler in which the fire-tubes 5 communicate with the combustion chamber 1 at the burner end of the chamber has at the burner end a water-cooled insert 21 defining with the walls of the combustion chamber passages 41 of reduced cross-sectional area through which the gases must pass before they enter the fire-tubes. Some of the gases are thus induced to recirculate back to the root of the burner flame in the combustion chamber. The insert has a central aperture 23 for the burner and is connected by pipes 25 with the water space of the boiler. If the fire-tubes 5 are asymmetrically arranged the insert is eccentrically disposed in relation to the boiler axis to ensure even loading of the fire tubes.
