In a boiler for producing hot water or steam comprising a first part 1 including a combustion chamber 2 and a water container including a water jacket having a portion extending over the top of the combustion chamber and at least one side part 11, gas ducts 9 and 20 in the parts communicate through co-operating aligned ports in the parts. The passage 23 in the part 11 communicates with the rear of the combustion chamber through ports 23<SP>1</SP>, surrounded by a gasket, in the side wall members of the parts 1 and 11 and the passage 24 in the part 11 communicates through ports 241 with the ducts 9 in the part 1. The gas ducts 9 discharge into a smoke box 17 with alternative outlets 18. The part 1 has a water inlet (13), Fig. 4 (not shown), to the water jacket which extends over the sides, bottom and one or both ends of the combustion chamber 2, and two outlets (14 and 15), Fig. 3 (not shown). The water container of the part 11 has a water inlet 25 and outlets 29 and the inlets and outlets of the parts 1 and 11 are connected by headers 26 and 27. In modifications, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), a single or two combustion chamber parts 1 may have two side parts on each of the two opposite sides. The boiler may be used for indirect water heating by supporting closed oil tanks, with breather and topping up pipes leading to the boiler exterior, on the shelves 31 in the side parts 11 and 12 and passing water through tubes or coils in the oil tanks. The front end of the combustion chamber 2 is provided with a burner for oil, town gas, natural gas, a gas prepared from solid fuel in a pre-burner or a liquid fuel and air mixture.
