Abstract

A boiler comprises a combustion chamber 11, Fig. 2, provided with a liquid fuel or gas burner B at its front end, and having at least a portion of its axial length surrounded by a number of longitudinal smoke channels 13 arranged between the combustion chamber and a jacket for the liquid A to be heated. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 (not shown), the smoke channels extend from the back end of the combustion chamber over about one-half of the length of the combustion chamber. In another embodiment, Figs. 4, 31, 32 (not shown), having smoke channels extending the full length of the combustion chamber, some of the smoke channels communicate directly with the combustion chamber through lateral openings (24) at their back ends, and these channels discharge the combustion gases into the front ends of the remaining smoke channels for subsequent passage to an outlet at the back end of the boiler. A further embodiment, Figs. 3 and 26 to 30 (not shown), has a square or circular flame-directing tube (18) surrounding the combustion space and extending rearwardly from the front end of the combustion chamber to a position spaced from the back end thereof. Moreover, the tube is surrounded by a series of smoke channels (17) spaced from the outer surface of the tube to form therewith passage means through which combustion gases flow towards the front end of the boiler, whereafter they pass into the channels and flow to an outlet at the back end of the boiler. Numerous alternative cross-sectional shapes and constructions of the smoke channels are disclosed, Figs. 5 to 32 (not shown), and include smoke channels of generally semicircular, triangular or rectangular cross-section soldered to one another, to the internal or external surfaces of a tubular member, or to T-shaped spacers.
