102,700. Royce, F. H., Day, B. I., and Rolls- Royce, Ltd. July 28, 1916. Clutches, friction.-In multipleplate and other friction clutches, means are provided for preventing end thrust on the shafts. The clutch casing b is connected by serrations a<4> to a flange a<2> secured to the driving-shaft a, a sleeve b<9> bolted to the casing bearing against the framing through a thrust bearing j<2>. Springs b<7> seated in the part b<9> bear against the presser-plate b<6> and compress the plates b<2> against a ring b<4> abutting against projections b' in the casing b, thus preventing external end thrust. The operating-lever d<1> engages a collar d bearing on a sleeve d' secured to the presserplate b<6>. During disengagement of the clutch, the springs b<7> are compressed, and the casing b moves slightly on the serrations a<4>, so that the end thrust is taken up by the bearing j<2>, and at no time is there end thrust on either the shaft a or the driven shaft c.
