Abstract

138,952. British Thomson - Houston Co., Collingham, R. H., and Naylor, C. H. Oct. 14, 1918. Motor power plant.-In friction clutches, applicable for driving blowers from electric motors and turbines or other prime movers, of the kind having a pair of conical members moved apart by engagement with right and left hand screwthreads on the driving-members, the motion is opposed by spring pressure and' is limited by a stop to limit the power transmitted. The driving- shaft 2 carries right and left hand screw-threads 14, 15 engaging clutch parts 11, 12 slidably connected by teeth 16 and supported on a collar 18. The part 12 carries a brake-drum 17, and when the brake is applied rotation of the shaft 2 moves the parts 11, 12 into engagement with the clutch parts 9, 10, respectively secured to member 3 on the driven shaft 1 and to a drum 5 connected to the member 3 by bolts 6 and springs 7. Increase of load produces axial movement of the parts 3, 5 until the drum 17 contacts with a stop 19 on the shaft 2, when further increase of load produces slip. The arrangement permits over-running of the shaft 3. A clutch such as described may be applied at either end of the driven shaft 1 so that a. blower may be driven normally by an electric motor at one end of the shaft and by a turbine or other prime mover at the other end, a starting-valve on the turbine &c. being kept normally closed by pressure from the blow until the electric motor fails or is cut out. The brake to start the turbine clutch may similarly be applied automatically.
