In a steam generating electrode boiler, parallel plate electrodes are pivoted as shown in Fig. 4, so that they can be rotated by a linkage as illustrated in Fig. 5, to vary the spacing between them uniformly (i.e. the plates remain substantially parallel). Feedwater is supplied to the boiler 10 via a reservoir tank 16, Fig. 1, so that when the boiler pressure rises due to steam generation, valve 24 opens and returns hot water to the storage tank. Operation of the linkage to vary the electrode spacing, and hence the rate of heat generation may be manual or controlled by boiler temperature or pressure.
