Abstract

1,018,685. Thermal switches; electromagnetic switches. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Oct. 24, 1963 [Oct. 30, 1962], No. 42052/63. Heading H2B. A motor control switch incorporates a heater 96, Fig. 1 (not shown), which is energized during starting to accelerate the operation of a bimetal overload switch 46, 42 if an overload occurs. Heavy starting current in a main winding 24 of a motor 28 energizes a solenoid 80 to attract an armature 74 releasing a spring- blade contact 66 into engagement with a contact 68 to energize an auxiliary winding 26. Simultaneously a contact 86 on the armature 74 disengages a contact 85 mounted upon blade 66 to insert the heater 96 in series with the solenoid 80. Should the motor be overloaded during starting the additional heating in the bimetal switch blade 46 due to excessive current causes the blade to snap out of contact with 42 to stop the motor. The blade 66 is mounted on an extension 62, 64 of the bimetal 46. If no overload occurs during starting the current in winding 24 eventually subsides sufficiently to release the armature 74 but should this not occur within a suitable time current flow in bimetal 62 eventually separates the blade 66 from contact 68 to de-energize the winding 26. If subsequent to starting an overload occurs, current in bimetal 62 separates contacts 85, 86 to re-energize heater 96 which assists the overload current in bimetal 46 to open the contacts 42, 46. The armature 74 carries a lead weight 72 and a felt pad 82 to reduce chattering. The overload bimetal 46 is adjustable by a screw 56.
