Abstract

428,658. Protective cut-out systems. SCHIELE & BRUCHSALER INDUSTRIEWERKE AKT.-GES., Baden-Baden, Germany, and CRABTREE & CO., Ltd., J. A., Lincoln Works, Walsall. Aug. 10, 1934, No. 23121. Convention date, Aug. 10, 1933. [Class 38 (v)] In a cut-out system of the type wherein a main switch 1 is closed by a coil 2 connected in a shunt circuit from the mains in series with an auxiliary switch 4, 5 normally held closed, against the action of a spring 7, by a latch 8 adapted to be released, on overload, by a thermal device, a resetting handle or pushbutton 13 for the auxiliary switch controls a contact-member in the shunt circuit, so that the latter cannot be closed until the handle or push-button has been released after resetting the auxiliary switch. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the contact-member 14 is integral with the push-button 13, and opens the shunt circuit at the points 14a, 14<b> when the button is pressed in to reset the auxiliary switch. The thermal device comprises bimetallic strips 11<a> ... 11<c> in each of the phases of the supply ; on overload, these strips displace an insulating push-rod 12 and release the latch 8. The arrangement may be used for controlling a motor driving a pump, and when it is desired to maintain the liquid in a reservoir at a uniform level, a floatoperated switch 6 may be included in the circuit of the coil 2. In a modification, Fig. 3, the contact 5 of the auxiliary switch is mounted on a leaf spring, which is deflected away from the contact 4 when the button 13 is operated to reset the contact 4. In another arrangement, Fig. 4, a separate push-button 16 is provided for closing the main switch 1, which carries an additional contact-member 15b for maintaining the operating circuit closed. The bimetallic strips 11<a> ... 11<c> are heated from current transformers 17<a> ... 17b. In a modification of this arrangement, Fig. 5, (not shown), the contact-members 14, 16 are operated by a pivoted handle.
