734,746. Controllers; control of A.C. motors; thermal switches; electromagnetic switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Oct. 29, 1953 [Oct. 30, 1952], No. 29948/53. Classes 38 (3) and 38 (5). A relay for controlling the starting operation of an electric motor having a starting winding 14 and a running winding 11 comprises an overload bimetallic strip 22 and a relay coil 6 with a soft iron plunger 4. A finger 37 extends from the lower end of the plunger and co-operates with a contact arm 33 which is made of high resistance material so that the arm also acts as a heater. The application of current to the leads 17, 26 completes a circuit through the running winding 11, the coil 6, and the overload strip 22. The starting current is sufficient to lift the plunger 4 so that contacts 32 close to complete a circuit through the starting winding 14. Under normal operating conditions, the current in the coil 6 decreases when the motor reaches full speed and the plunger 4 drops to separate contacts 32, so opening the starting winding circuit. If the high-current condition in the coil 6 is prolonged however, the heat derived from the contact arm 33 is added to that generated in the strip 22 which flexes to open the overload contacts 23 and to disconnect the motor. The temperature at which the overload strip will open its contacts is determined by a U-shaped spring 27 having one end positioned in an aperture in the strip and the other end anchored to a pendent arm 29. An adjusting screw 30 is used for regulating the pressure between contacts 23.
