Abstract
591,634. Protective cut-out arrangements; thermal switches; snap - action switches; control of motors. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Nov. 30, 1944, No. 23909. Convention date, Nov. 6, 1943. [Classes 38(iii) and 38(v)] A control device 40 for disconnecting a single-phase motor 30 from the supply P1, P2 in response to an abnormal current, is modified by a thermo-responsive device in thermal relation with the motor and normally shunting part of the current to the control device but which accelerates the operation of the control device by opening the shunt in response to an abnormal motor temperature. Control device 40 comprises a thermo-electric element 47 the expansion of which causes a spring 45 to rotate a pivoted frame 41 clockwise, and conversely. Secured, one on each side of frame 41 are flexible blades 50, 60 having flexible fingers 54, 64 respectively, secured thereto, their free ends resting in notches 55, 65 in the frame 41 and arranged so that on clockwise movement of the latter, finger 54 snaps blade 50 against a stop 56 to open contacts 52, 53, before finger 64 actuates blade 60 to open contacts 62, 63. Current is supplied to the motor through the element 47 and contacts 52, 53 and 62, 63 respectively, to starting and running windings 32, 33. The heavy starting current causes element 47 to expand, thereby opening contacts 52, 53 and leaving only the running winding 33 in circuit. An overload causes further expansion of element 47 resulting in the opening of contacts 62, 63 and the disconnection of the motor from the supply. Shunting the element 47 and in thermal relation to the motor is a normally-closed thermal switch comprising a bimetallic element 71 which, in the event of the motor-temperature becoming abnormal, opens and so the entire supply current passes through element 47, and accelerates the opening of contacts 62, 63.
