Abstract

Thermal switches; partly electromagnetic.-For the protection of motors and apparatus against overload a pair of bimetallic strips 5, 6 within an enclosure 1 and carrying the main current serve, when the overload has existed long enough as determined by the variable effective length of the current path through the strips, to distort the strips and withdraw a spring member 9 which carries the armature 11 away from contacting engagement with the poles of a permanent magnet 12, thereby producing a quick-break action. The member 9 is connected to one terminal of the control circuit of the circuit breaker and the connector 13 in contact with the magnet with the other terminal so that, when the control circuit is broken, the circuit-breaker is opened. Instead of direct armature-to-magnet contact, ordinary contacts may be mounted on these parts. Adjustment for current and time is effected by moving the adjustable bridge-piece 7 which alters the effective length of bimetallic strip in the motor circuit.. The rate of heating and cooling of the thermal device is less than that of the machine or apparatus to be protected.
