Class 103(1) An eddy current brake, the inductors of which are indicated at 1, is controlled by a circuit which makes it possible to apply to at least some of the inductors a voltage higher than that which can be used for an unlimited period, so as to thus obtain intensive braking, automatic means being provided for reducing the voltage before it can injure the brake. In the circuit of Fig. 1, power is supplied normally from a single battery 2 through a switch 8 and line 4 to a control switch 15, 20. To energize the brake the arm 20 is moved so as to close arm 15 with contacts 16, 16<SP>1</SP>, 17 successively cutting out resistances. Further movement of arm 15 brings it into engagement with a spring loaded stop 18 which when depressed closes a switch contact 13 so as to energize a line 12 to a relay 9. Energization of relay 9 closes a switch 8 between line 6 and 7 so that a battery 2<SP>1</SP> as well as a battery 2 is now connected in series with the inductors 1 and intensive braking results. The unit 10 in the circuit to the relay coil 9 contains a thermostat, for instance a bimetallic strip, which keeps the circuit 11, 12 closed as long as the brake does not reach a certain temperature. Above this temperature it operates to interrupt the feed circuit to the relay 9. Instead of a thermostat a simple time measuring device may be used. Alternative dispositions for the switch 13 are also described.
