Abstract

849,299. Control of A.C. motors; thermal switches. GENERAL MOTORS, FRANCE. Feb. 11, 1959 [June 23, 1958], No. 19983/58. Classes 38 (3) and 38 (5). Apparatus for continuously reversing a splitphase motor comprises switches K1, K2, K3, provided with normally-engaged contacts 54- 60, 56-84, and 58-62, respectively. When power is switched-on, current passes through switches K1, K3, and the running windings P1, P2, of the motor, a heater coil R1 being energized through the switch K3. At the same time, the starting winding S of the motor is supplied with current through the switch K2. After a predetermined interval, the heater coil R1 causes movement of the bimetallic strip 16 which carries with it an insulation strip 20 and spring abutments 22, 24, 26. Switch K1 is operated at first, under pressure from a toggle spring 32, so that a blade 42 moves to a position in which contact 54 engages contact 66 to break the motor-circuit. The motor comes to rest and a centrifugal switch C closes. The heater R1 remains energized, however, so causing further movement of the strip 16 until switch K2 is operated by a toggle spring 34 which forces a blade 44 to shift to a position in which contact 56 engages contact 86. The heater coil R1 continues to be energized, and further movement of the strip 16 ultimately operates the switch K3, whereupon a blade 46 is moved by toggle spring 36 to engage contacts 58, 68. Under these conditions, the motor re-starts in the reverse direction, and, when a pro-determined speed is reached, the centrifugal switch C disconnects the starting winding. A heater coil R2 is now energized, and this causes a bimetallic strip 18 to move in a direction opposite to the previous movement of the strip 16. Switch K1 operates eventually to disconnect the motor, leaving the heater R2 energized. Subsequently, the switch K2 reverses the connection of the starting winding, and, finally, the switch K3 re-connects the motor to the supply for rotation in the original direction.
