Abstract

101,668. King, C. F. L. April 25, 1916. Spray carburettors; vaporizers, external.-In a bi-fuel carburettor having several jets which are brought into action in succession by a suctionactuated valve, some of the jets are supplied with petrol and are in action at starting, and the remainder are supplied with paraffin and are brought into action in succession as a gravity valve is raised by suction. The fuel and air to the carburettor and the mixture therefrom are heated by the exhaust. The petrol jets may be cut out automatically after starting. The carburettor 1, Fig. 4. comprises one or more petrol jets 7-and paraffin jets 11 supplied from two float chambers. The petrol jet 7 delivers into a choke-tube 27 always open to the induction pipe, and the paraffin jets 11 into choke-tubes 28 which are brought into action in succession by a suction-actuated gravity valve 2, which slides over the choke-tube 27. The chamber 17 surrounding the jets is supplied with hot air from a muff or sleeve 15, Fig. 1, around the exhaust pipe 13. In a modification, the choketube 27 delivers into the induction pipe through lateral apertures. which are closed by the valve 2 after it has risen sufficiently to uncover one of the choke-tubes 28. The pipe 19, Fig. 5, connecting the carburettor to the cylinders is enclosed in a jacket 20, to which exhaust gases are led by a pipe 21, so that the flame therefrom may impinge on the bend of the pipe 19, the gases escaping at 22. The paraffin on its way to the float chamber is heated in a pipe 14, Fig. 1, closely coiled around the exhaust pipe 13; or it may be heated by circulating in a jacket surrounding a short piece of pipe interposed, with flanged joints, in the exhaust pipe.
