Abstract
A method of blackening a metal surface such as Ni, Mo, Fe, stainless steel or Al comprises covering the metal surface with a suspension of Al powder and Sb2O3 or Sb2O5 in a suitable liquid and then heating the surface at between 600 DEG C. and 650 DEG C. in a reducing atmosphere whereby to form on the surface a dark-coloured alloy. Suitable liquids are water or an organic solution of nitrocellulose, ethylene glycol and butanol. The method may be used in making electronic valves, obtaining decorative effects and for protecting iron or steel structures from corrosion. It may be applied to surfaces to improve their heat absorption or dissipation by radiation.
