Abstract
1,008,289. Hot-water boilers. COCHRAN & CO., and ARRAN Ltd. Sept. 1, 1964 [Sept. 10, 1963], No. 35745/63. Heading F4A. An oil-fired boiler for water or other liquids comprises a sealed pressure shell 1 within the upper part of which is located a furnace tube 2 enclosed in a jacket 4 having an inlet 5 and outlet 6 for the water &c., to be heated. Gases from an oil burner 7 discharge from the tube 2 into a transfer chamber 8 whence they pass forwardly through tubes 9 located below the tube 2 and immersed in water filling the shell 1 to a level 10. Dew point corrosion of the gas contacted surfaces of the tubes 9 is avoided by maintaining such a steam pressure in the shell 1, as regulated by a device 11 responsive to pressure or temperature and which controls the firing rate, as will keep the temperature of the tubes above the dew point. The outer wall of the jacket 4 is heated by the steam in the pressure chamber which continually condenses on the wall surface. In a modification the water in the pressure chamber is circulated in an external circuit including heating means. In a further modification, Figs. 3 to 6 (not shown), the gases leave the furnace 2 through a circumferential opening, the end of the tube being water jacketed or closed by a refractory plug and two passes through return tubes are provided.
