Abstract

In an opposed-piston machine, a piston 6 forming or carrying a crosshead of a connecting rod and crank-shaft assembly 8, 9 is coupled directly by a rod 5 to one piston 4 and by a pair of displacer pistons 13 and liquid columns to the other piston 3. The displacer cylinders 14 are filled with gas at superatmospheric pressure below the pistons 13. The effective liquid displacement of the piston 6 is equal to that of both pistons 13 and the volume of liquid may be varied to adjust the compression ratio. Liquid is supplied to the crosshead pin and the crank-pin through passages 17, 18, 19.
