Abstract

Se describe un procedimiento mejorado para producir una brea anisotrópica singular que contiene metales, adecuada para la fabricación de fibras de carbono. Se añaden compuestos organometálicos aromáticos solubles a un material de alimentación carbonoso que está sustancialmente exento de brea mesofásica, y se difunde calor en la composición resultante para proporcionar un producto de brea isotrópica que contiene mesógenos y compuestos organometálicos aromáticos solubles. Seguidamente, se fracciona con disolvente el producto de brea para separar mesógenos que contienen metales de los compuestos organometálicos. Los mesógenos que contienen metales se calientan a una temperatura suficiente para provocar su fusionamiento y producir una brea mesofásica que contiene metales. En otro método, se difunde calor en el material de alimentación carbonoso para proporcionar un producto de brea isotrópica que contiene mesógenos, y se añaden compuestos organometálicos aromáticos solubles de altoupeso molecular al producto de brea isotrópica que contiene mesógenos ante el fraccionamiento con disolvente. Las fibras de carbono que contienen metales producidas a partir de la brea mesofásica presentan propiedades reforzadas de estabilización, resistencia a la tracción y módulo de tracción. Alternativamente, el fraccionamiento con disolvente o la separación se lleva a condiciones de extracción supercríticas para producir una brea mesofásica que contiene metales. Pueden añadirse compuestos organometálicos al material de alimentación carbonoso antes o después de la operación de difusión de calor.
