Definitions
- the present invention relates to a process for producing an alcohol selected from polyvinyl alcohol and ethylene vinyl alcohol.
- the products of this process are characterized by a particularly high color stability compared to the products of the prior art.
- Polyvinyl alcohol is a very important plastic that is used in many technical fields, such as thickeners in paints, hair sprays, shampoos and adhesives, packaging material, artificial casings or as textile fiber. In addition, it is also used in the medical field ( Marten, FL 2002. Vinyl Alcohol Polymers. Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology, pages 1 to 34 ).
- Ethylene vinyl alcohol has a similar use: it finds application as a barrier material, e.g. for the airtight insulation of food.
- Polyvinyl alcohol and ethylene vinyl alcohol are similar in their chemical structure.
- Polyvinyl alcohol is formally a polymer of monomer units of vinyl alcohol and can be represented chemically by the general structural formula - (CH 2 -CHOH) n -.
- Ethylene vinyl alcohol is formally a copolymer of vinyl alcohol and ethene and comprises, in random order, monomer units derived from ethene [- (CH 2 -CH 2 ) n -] and vinyl alcohol [- (CH 2 -CHOH) n -].
- Polyvinyl alcohol is usually obtained from polyvinyl acetate, in which the acetate groups of the polyvinyl acetate are alkali-saponified with a base or transesterified with an alcoholate.
- the present invention was therefore based on the object of providing a process by means of which ethylene-vinyl alcohol or polyvinyl alcohol, which is even more color-stable than those with the process of the prior art (US Pat. US 2,862,916 ) can be produced.
- step a) of the process according to the invention a polymer P selected from polyvinyl acetate, ethylene vinyl acetate is provided.
- "provided” may, in particular in the sense of the invention, mean that the polymer P is initially introduced into a reactor or, in particular if the process is continuous is carried out and the polymer P is used in solution, in particular as an alcoholic solution - is used as a reaction stream.
- Polyvinyl Acetate (CAS Number: 9003-20-7) is a thermoplastic that is accessible by radical homopolymerization of vinyl acetate.
- Ethylene vinyl acetate (other name "ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer”) is a copolymer of ethene and vinyl acetate.
- the ethene content in ethylene-vinyl acetate is between 30 and 70% by weight, preferably between 40 and 70% by weight.
- the polymer P is used as an alcoholic solution, in particular in an alcohol selected from methanol, ethanol, particularly preferably in methanol.
- the proportion of the polymer P in this alcoholic solution is in particular from 5 to 90% by weight, preferably from 10 to 75% by weight, more preferably from 25 to 50% by weight.
- step b) of the process according to the invention a mixture M is then added to the polymer P.
- the mixture M comprises two components, namely a stabilizer S and a base B.
- the base B is selected from the group consisting of (earth) alkali metal alcoholate, (alkaline earth) alkali hydroxide.

Description
Vinyl Alcohol Polymers. Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology, Seiten 1 bis 34).
US 2,862,916 .
