Definitions
- the invention relates to a process for the treatment of animal skins wherein an oil, fat or polymer is applied to the skin and the skin is treated in a compressed gas, wherein the amount of oil, fat or polymer applied to the skin is less than 20%. , preferably less than 15%, more preferably less than 10%, of the weight of the skin.
- animal hides Animal skins, leather, skins or furs are subjected to various treatment steps in order to preserve them and to produce certain properties.
- animal hides of all kinds, in particular leather, fur and furs are generally referred to below as animal hides.
- the animal's skin is treated with water-insoluble fats for extra suppleness.
- the incorporation of the fat takes place either mechanically or by impregnation in an aqueous liquor.
- fat is added to the skin in an amount equivalent to about 30% or often 50% of the skin weight.
- the object of the present invention is to provide an improved process for the fatliquoring of animal hides.
- This object is achieved by a method of the type mentioned, wherein the skin is treated in compressed carbon dioxide at a pressure below 70 bar and a temperature below 25 ° C.
- an oil, fat or polymer is first applied to the animal's skin. Subsequently, the greased skin is treated in compressed carbon dioxide.
- the inventive method a part of the naturally contained in the animal skin fats is replaced by the fats and oils added according to the invention.
- an improved structure of the skin is achieved, which is characterized by an increased lubricity of the skin or leather structure making up molecules.
- a leather or fur treated in accordance with the invention is "more straightforward" and more extensible, ie has greater permanent deformations than conventionally treated leather. This is z. As desired in precious furs, to keep the weight of the clothing made of fur garments low.
- the fat and oil is less limited to 15%, more preferably less than 10% of the weight of the skin to be treated.
- the fat, oil or polymer is sprayed on the animal's skin. It is particularly favorable if the skin is circulated or rotated during the spraying in order to achieve a uniform application of the fat, oil or polymer.
- the pressurization in a compressed gas is also part of the present invention possible impregnation techniques, but it is often commercially useful to use the expensive pressure vessels only for subsequent degreasing.
- the fat, oil or polymer is left for a time, e.g. 15 to 60 minutes into the skin.
- a time e.g. 15 to 60 minutes into the skin.
- the oil or polymer is massaged into the skin, on the other hand, the elastic properties of the coat or leather are improved by the mechanical processing.
- noble furs generally longer exposure times of, for example, up to one hour, preferably also with simultaneous movement of the precious furs, provided.
- animal skins of all kinds in particular leather, skins and furs
- animal skins are generally referred to as animal skins.
- the invention is generally applicable to the leather sector, for example for processing or treating sheep, fox or reindeer skins or leathers.
- the method according to the invention is particularly suitable for the treatment of hides in which the hair coat is to be obtained.
- the invention brings technical, qualitative and commercial benefits.
- Essential to the invention is the subsequent treatment of the skin in compressed carbon dioxide at a pressure of less than 70 bar and a temperature below 25 ° C.
- subcritical carbon dioxide has the advantage that the cleaning machines can be made simpler and cheaper than those for supercritical applications that are designed for significantly higher pressures.
- such machines designed for the use of subcritical carbon dioxide are already commercially available for the dry cleaning of textiles with carbon dioxide and only have to be modified slightly for use according to the invention in the leather and fur area. Due to the lower process pressures compared to supercritical degreasing decompression can be done faster after degreasing. In this case, in particular, a sudden evaporation of carbon dioxide present in the leather or hide is avoided, which otherwise brings with it the risk of mechanical damage to the leather or fur.
- the treatment in the compressed gas serves on the one hand the even distribution of fat or oil in the animal skin, on the other hand to remove excess fat.
- Treatment of animal skin in subcritical carbon dioxide optimally fulfills both of these tasks.
- the removal of excess fat with subcritical carbon dioxide is slow, so that during washing, the fat is evenly distributed over the entire surface of the animal's skin.
- the skin, coat or leather is treated with the compressed carbon dioxide in at least two, preferably three to five, successive steps.
- the greased leather is washed in a first batch with liquid carbon dioxide.
- the grease previously applied to the leather partially dissolves in the carbon dioxide.
- Part of the fat is then dumped back to untreated areas of the leather. In this way, the fat is evenly distributed over the whole leather.
- the leather is circulated in the carbon dioxide bath.
- the compressed fat carbon dioxide in the example above, the liquid carbon dioxide, a distillation subjected to then be transferred in a purified state back into a reservoir can.
- a co-solvent for example from the group of alcohols, ketones, paraffins or esters, or another additive, including a fragrance, to effectively remove particularly stubbornly adhering substances.
- the skin is treated in the compressed carbon dioxide until the weight of the skin is less than its weight before application of the oil, fat or polymer.
- Animal skin, leather or skins already contain fats naturally.
- these fats are partly washed out and replaced with the added, specifically selected fats or oils.
- the choice of these fats and oils can be made on the basis of their solubility in carbon dioxide, choosing an oil that is to remain at least partially in the leather based on its lower (compared to oils and fats naturally contained in the leather) solubility in carbon dioxide.
- the degreasing is carried out to advantage to such an extent that the hide or leather after degreasing is easier than in the untreated state before the fat was applied.
- the weight of the hide or leather after degreasing is at least 1% less than in the untreated state.
- a hand-dry mink fur has a relative weight of 100 after tanning.
- the mink fur is now greased according to the invention.
- between 5 and 15% of its weight in fats and oils is added to the mink fur.
- the total weight of the mink fur is then depending on the addition of fat between 105 and 115.
- the fur is cleaned and degreased in liquid carbon dioxide until its total weight is 93-97.
- oils, fats or polymers which are applied to the animal skin to be treated, the following substances or substance groups have proven: oxypropylated fatty alcohols and polypropylene glycol and mixtures thereof, fatty amino ethoxylates and propoxylates, polyhydroxy compounds, esters, derivatives of Sugars, sorbitan esters, alkyl polyglycosides, glycerides, silicones, paraffin, polyethers and fluoro compounds. These substances lead to increased elasticity and tack of the leather or fur. This means a direct economic benefit to the leather or coat processor and an increased value for the end user.
- Time-consuming mechanical processing of the leather for introducing the fat can be omitted.
- the oil or fat is applied and then distributed during the treatment in the compressed gas on the leather or rock surface and, in particular when the leather or fur is circulated, incorporated into this.
