    Claims (11)

    1. A rail profile grinding machine, comprising a grinding head (9) carrying an abrasive grinding tool (15) mounted to rotate about an axis (23) and capable also of describing an up/down movement parallel to its axis of rotation (23), the grinding head (9) being carried by the central part of a chassis (4) provided, at its ends, with means (5-8) for running, guiding and fitting on a rail (1) of a railroad track or the like, the grinding machine also comprising motorized means (14) for rotating the grinding tool (15) about its axis (23) and maneuvering means (10) for moving the grinding machine back and forth (F) in the longitudinal direction of the rail (1) that is to be ground, the chassis (4) pivoting with the grinding head (9) about a longitudinal axis so as to provide a choice of grinding the top side of the rail (1), or the flank of the rail head (3) on the inside of the track or the flank of the rail head (3) on the outside of the track, characterized in that the motorized means for rotating the grinding tool (15) consist of an internal combustion engine (14) with horizontal output shaft (19), the engine (14) being fixed to a support (16) which is articulated, about a longitudinal axis (17), to a balancing assembly (11, 12, 13) itself mounted to pivot about a longitudinal spindle (40) on the chassis (4) and designed to occupy, in use, a horizontal position by resting on the other rail (2) of the track, while the horizontal output shaft (19) of the engine (14) is connected to the grinding head (9) carried by the chassis (4) by a transmission assembly comprising a transmission box (20) forming a kind of link, articulated between the output shaft (19) of the engine (14) and a horizontal axis (21) connected to the chassis (4) or to the grinding head (9), in such a way as to limit the inclination of the support (16) to small angles.
    2. The rail profile grinding machine as claimed in claim 1, characterized in that the transmission assembly comprises a driving gear wheel (24) carried by the horizontal output shaft (19) of the engine (14), a toothed belt (25) housed in the transmission box (20), a driven gear wheel (26) fixed on a horizontal shaft (27) mounted to rotate about the horizontal axis (21) of articulation of the transmission box (20) to the chassis (4) or the grinding head (9), and an angular transmission in the form of a pair of bevel gears (28, 29) connecting the latter shaft (27) to a sleeve (30) coaxial with the grinding tool (15) and connected by splines (33) to a shaft (34) carrying the grinding tool (15).
    3. The rail profile grinding machine as claimed in claim 2, characterized in that the chassis (4) has two offset longitudinal portions (4a, 4b), the horizontal shaft (27) mounted along the axis of articulation of the transmission box (20) entering the grinding head (9) at the "discontinuity" between the two portions (4a, 4b) of the chassis (4).
    4. The rail profile grinding machine as claimed in any of claims 1 to 3, characterized in that spring-loaded means (22) are provided, which act on the pivoting support (16) of the combustion engine (14) to compensate for the weight of this engine (14).
    5. The rail profile grinding machine as claimed in claim 4, characterized in that the aforementioned spring-loaded means are produced in the form of a gas spring (22) or a spring of any other kind, articulated between the balancing assembly (11, 12, 13) and the pivoting support (16) of the engine (14).
    6. The rail profile grinding machine as claimed in any of claims 1 to 5, characterized in that the inclination of the pivoting support (16) of the engine (14), and therefore of the engine (14) itself, with respect to the horizontal does not exceed about 15°, whereas the chassis (4) carrying the grinding head (9) can be inclined by ± 90° to one side or the other with respect to its vertical central position.
    7. The rail profile grinding machine as claimed in any of claims 1 to 6, characterized in that the balancing assembly comprises, on the one hand, a bow (11) connecting the ends of the chassis (4) together and pivoting via its own ends (39) about a longitudinal spindle (40), relative to this chassis (4), and, on the other hand, a transverse balancing bar (12) fixed removably to the central part of the bow (11) and provided with a roller or follower (13) designed to press and roll along the other rail (2) of the track.
    8. The rail profile grinding machine as claimed in claim 7, characterized in that the pivoting support (16) of the engine (14) is articulated (at 17) to a yoke (18) which is fixed in the central part of the bow (11) some distance from the spindle articulalting the bow (11) to the chassis (4).
    9. The rail profile grinding machine as claimed in any of claims 1 to 8, characterized in that the maneuvering means for the back and forth movement (F) of the grinding machine comprise an orientable maneuvering arm (10) mounted to pivot about a longitudinal axis (43) on the chassis (4), means (44-47) being provided for immobilizing the maneuvering arm (10) in a preselected angular position.
    10. The rail profile grinding machine as claimed in any of claism 1 to 9, characterized in that the chassis (4) of which carries, at each end, a set of two guide rollers (36) with parallel axes, mounted on a common support (37) itself mounted to rotate about a longitudinal axis relative to the corresponding end of the chassis (4), on which end is also pivotably mounted one end (39) of the balancing assembly (11, 12, 13), a connection by way of gears (38, 42) connecting the support (37) of the guide rollers (36) to the end (39) of the balancing assembly (11, 12, 13) and/or to the chassis (4) in such a way that pivoting of this assembly (11, 12, 13) relative to the chassis (4) is accompanied by proportional orientation of the guide rollers (36).
    11. The rail profile grinding machine as claimed in all of claims 7 and 10, characterized in that each end of the bow (11) is secured to a mounting block (39) mounted to pivot about a spindle (40) secured to the end of the chassis (4), the mounting block (39) having a circular hub (41) around which the support (37) of the guide rollers (36) is mounted to rotate, which support (37) has a circular opening in which an internally toothed annulus gear (38) meshing with a pinion (42) secured to the spindle (40), is mounted.
