Description

The present invention relates to a device allowing careful surfacing and polishing of the side or edge, generally vertical, of a solid piece or prefabricated element, extending horizontally and laid flat on a suitable support.

We know that the lateral edge of a stone placed flat, like a slab or a stele, generally presents itself vertically and offers a contour which, depending on the intended use, can include a profile with straight parts, concave or convex with variable and more or less complex curvatures depending on the intended use for the stone to be worked. The surfacing and then the polishing thereof are carried out by means of generally cylindrical wheels, called roller wheels, fixed at the end of a vertical rotary spindle carried by a manual or automatic machine.

However, to obtain an acceptable final polishing on the vertical edge of the stone, it is usually necessary to successively use five grinding stones, the grain of which, diamond or carborundum, is decreasing. However, with this type of roller wheel, it turns out that the polishing operation hardly allows to go beyond the use of the third grain size, the corresponding wheels, working with their periphery, being in contact with the edge of the stone according to a vertical generator and having a tendency to deform, notwithstanding a vertical sweep parallel to the axis of the rotary spindle with which they can be animated. As a result, the final polishing is insufficient, with an imperfect surface condition and in total the formation in the song of the stone of successive facets and not of a surface whose curvature has no discontinuity.

To overcome this drawback, the process implemented in the machines for surfacing and polishing stones or solid prefabricated elements laid flat, consists after a preliminary work of the stones by the grinding wheels with rollers driven in rotation around a vertical axis until '' at an acceptable grain size for these grinding stones, turn the stone 90 ° to bring it into a vertical plane and finish polishing its lateral surface using another type of grinding stone with a flat working face arranged at right angles to the vertical axis of rotation, this working face being intended to be applied flat on the edge of the stone, which then extends horizontally.

In addition to the essential use of a gimbal for mounting such a grinding wheel under the rotating spindle of the machine, which allows this grinding wheel the necessary freedom of movement, this solution has the disadvantage of requiring a rocking of the stone to bring it from its horizontal position where it is laid flat, in a vertical position, which requires difficult handling, often delicate to implement without risk for the stone itself and which, in any case, considerably strain the cost price of the operation.

It is true that there are polishing machines comprising grinding wheels whose flat working face is arranged vertically and could therefore be applied flat against the vertical edge of a stone placed flat. This is the case for example in the machine according to FR 1 422 266. However, a machine of this kind cannot be used for the type of work to which the subject of the invention relates, that is to say finishing the polishing of the edge of a stone laid flat using the same machine as that used initially for the roughing of this polishing with roller-grinders with vertical axis. Moreover, the machine according to FR 1 422 266 is very complex and unsuitable for the work envisaged. In addition, it cannot be used for polishing a curved profile edge.

Japanese patent publication JP 59 134 655 relates to a device for polishing a vertical surface, which is adaptable to the vertical shaft of a polishing machine. This device comprises a grinding wheel placed in a vertical plane and the horizontal shaft of which is carried by a support capable of being suspended from the vertical spindle of a polishing machine.

However, this device is relatively complicated and moreover it only allows the work of a vertical surface. This device cannot therefore be used for polishing edges with a certain inclination.

This is why the present invention aims to achieve a device of very simple design, capable of being adapted on the vertical spindle of a polishing machine and which is able to allow both to polish the inclined edge or the vertical edge of a stone or other piece to be polished.

To this end the invention relates to a device adaptable to the spindle with a vertical axis of a polishing machine, and which is intended to allow the surfacing and polishing of the edge of a stone or of a solid prefabricated element placed flat, by means of a rotating grinding wheel, the working face of which is arranged vertically, while the support of its horizontal drive shaft is suspended from the spindle with a vertical axis of the corresponding polishing machine, leaving this spindle free to rotate to allow the vertical working face of the grinding wheel to orient itself in relation to the edge of the stone or other material to be polished, the arrangement being such that the median wear line of the working face of the grinding wheel is arranged in a plane passing through the vertical axis of the spindle of the machine on which this device is adapted, characterized in that the support of the horizontal shaft of the grinding wheel consists of a housing also carrying the motor training ent of this shaft, and this housing is suspended from a support associated with the rotary spindle with a vertical axis of the corresponding machining machine, by means of an articulated attachment device comprising two parts articulated around a common axis, a locking member making it possible to immobilize this box in the desired position. Thus, the housing carrying the drive shaft of the working wheel can be arranged horizontally if the edge to be polished is vertical and it can be placed in any desired inclination if this edge is inclined.

But in either case, the whole of the present device can rotate around the vertical axis of the spindle of the machine on which this device is adapted. Consequently, when the grinding wheel is in pressure contact with the edge of the polishing stone, it follows exactly the outline outlined, whatever its profile and in particular the succession of straight, concave or convex parts that it present.

It is thus possible to mill, surface and polish with a remarkable degree of finish the edge of the stone or any other solid prefabricated element whatever the locations where the grinding wheels must act, in particular the parts arranged inside the volume of the stone, for example window paintings or prefabricated elements of building facades.

Other characteristics and advantages of a surfacing and polishing device established in accordance with the invention will become more apparent from the following description of several exemplary embodiments, given by way of non-limiting example with reference to the appended drawings in which:

Only the embodiment in Figure 4 is claimed.

Identical reference numbers have been used in these various figures to designate the same members on both.

In the embodiment shown in Figure 1, the reference 1 designates as a whole, a device to allow the surfacing and polishing of the lateral vertical edge of a stone or a similar prefabricated element (not shown), placed flat on the support of a machining machine of a type known per se.

This machine comprises in particular a vertical spindle mounted for rotation about an axis shown in the drawing under reference 2, the device with its flange 3 being screwed onto the spindle with vertical axis 2 of the machine.

A son extrémité inférieure, l'arbre 4 comporte un embout 8 sur lequel est immobilisé un pignon conique 9 bloqué en bout par une clavette de butée axiale 10.The device 1 mounted under the vertical axis 2 of the spindle is mainly composed of a vertical transmission axis 4 mounted inside a main housing 5 comprising two parts which, in the embodiment illustrated in the figure , are designated under the references 5a and 5b and extend substantially perpendicular to each other. The shaft 4 arranged along the vertical axis 2 of the spindle is rotatably mounted with the latter inside the part 5a of the housing on ball bearings such as 6 and 7. At its lower end, the shaft 4 comprises a nozzle 8 on which a conical pinion 9 is immobilized, blocked at the end by an axial stop key 10.

The bevel gear 9 is designed to cooperate with a second bevel gear 11, fixed on the end piece 12 of a horizontal axis 13, extending inside the second part 5b of the housing 5, this shaft 13 having its horizontal axis and therefore perpendicular to axis 2 of the drive spindle. The horizontal shaft 13 is rotatably mounted inside the housing 5b on bearings 14 and 15 and has at its opposite end outside the housing a head 16 on which can be immobilized, by means in themselves conventional , a cup wheel 17 whose figure schematically illustrates the profile.

At its opposite end, the horizontal axis 13 has an axial bore 18 to which is connected a rotary connector 19, itself connected to a central water supply (not shown) for injecting from the inside of the axis 13 towards the cup wheel 17 the water necessary for the lubrication of this wheel during its use for surfacing and polishing the stone to be worked.

In FIG. 1, the cup wheel 17 of a type which is itself perfectly known, is shown with a dotted transverse line 20, schematically showing on average the zone of attack of the wheel on the edge of the stone to be machined according to the wear of this grinding wheel during use.

Comme on le voit, la ligne pointillée 20 de la meule est située à une distance désignée sur le dessin par la référence L par rapport à l'axe vertical de la broche rotative entraînant l'ensemble du mécanisme et notamment réalisant la rotation de la moule boisseau 17 par l'intermédiaire de son arbre support 13 grâce, au système de renvoi à pignons coniques 9 et 10.As can be seen, the dotted line 20 of the grinding wheel is located at a distance designated in the drawing by the reference L with respect to the vertical axis of the rotary spindle driving the entire mechanism and in particular carrying out the rotation of the mold plug 17 via its support shaft 13 thanks to the bevel gear system 9 and 10.

By construction, the distance L is reduced as much as possible so as to avoid the overhang of the grinding wheel relative to the axis of the rotary spindle. In addition, these provisions result in transmitting to the wheel a certain inertia due to the rotation of the axis. In addition, due to the previous distance L, in operation, the grinding wheel 17 tends to undergo a certain movement of oscillation with respect to the edge of the stone relative to its axis or else to "dig" slightly as the its displacement on the song of the stone.

To overcome this drawback and limit the oscillation effect of the mold as much as possible, a first solution may consist in mounting around the housing 5 carrying the latter a counterweight or stabilizing springs limiting to some extent the effect inertial drive of the housing.

Cette solution consiste à éviter tout porte à faux de la meule par rapport à l'axe de rotation de la broche, en ramenant à zéro la valeur de la distance 1 prévue dans le premier exemple de réalisation.FIG. 2 illustrates another embodiment of the device according to the invention which makes it possible to eliminate more effectively during use the oscillation effect of the grinding wheel and the drawbacks that it may present for machining and the perfect surfacing of the edge of the stone to be worked. This solution consists in avoiding any overhang of the grinding wheel with respect to the axis of rotation of the spindle, by reducing to zero the value of the distance 1 provided for in the first embodiment.

A cet effet l'axe 2 de la broche entraine à l'intérieur du boîtier 21 un arbre intermédiaire vertical 22 sur lequel est immobilisé un pignon droit 23 engrenant lui- même avec un pignon 3 de même diamètre 24 immobilisé sur l'axe 4 monté à l'intérieur de la partie 5a du boîtier 5.To this end, the device under consideration, which for the whole takes up the mechanical arrangements implemented in the first example, comprises an additional housing 21 interposed between the vertical axis of rotation 2 of the spindle and the body of the main housing 5. A this effect the axis 2 of the spindle drives inside the housing 21 a vertical intermediate shaft 22 on which is immobilized a straight pinion 23 meshing itself with a pinion 3 of the same diameter 24 immobilized on the axis 4 mounted at the interior of part 5a of the housing 5.

In this alternative embodiment, the dotted line 20, representing the average attack face of the cup wheel 17 against the edge of the stone to be surfaced and polished according to the wear of this wheel, is located substantially in the vertical axis. 2 spindle rotation, which eliminates the cantilever effect noted previously. However, in this variant, there still remains the inertia effect created by the rotation of the spindle and makes it useful to maintain a counterweight or springs on the main housing of the device making it possible to improve the stability of the assembly.

In a third variant embodiment illustrated in FIG. 3, the vertical axis of the spindle 2 no longer directly controls the driving movement of the horizontal shaft of the cup wheel.

In this variant, the spindle with vertical axis 2 is associated with a support 25 under which is fixed a console 26 by means of an immobilizing flange 27. At the opposite end of the support 26 is mounted the main housing 28 inside which extends horizontally a horizontal drive shaft 29, guided in the housing on bearings such as 30 and 31. At one of its ends, the shaft 29 is directly connected to a hydraulic motor or similar 32 and has at its opposite end a head 33 on which is fixed a cup wheel 34, the median wear line shown diagrammatically under the reference 35 is substantially arranged in the plane of the vertical axis 2 of the spindle.

In this variant, the spindle of the machine is thus left free to rotate in order to allow the face of the cup wheel to orient itself relative to the edge of the stone laid flat which should be planed and polished.

The assembly produced is very simple and quick to assemble, requiring only its adaptation to the rotary spindle 2 and its fixing in the manner of a tool chuck. It should be noted that the design of the device in this third variant of embodiment makes it possible to easily adjust the position of the grinding wheel relative to the edge of the stone to be surfaced and polished in order to obtain a better hold of the assembly when the grinding wheel is moving. in pressure on the concav or convex forms of the song of this stone.

This other variant differs from the previous one in that the corresponding main housing 28a, inside which the drive shaft 29a extends, is attached to the corresponding support 25a via an articulated connection device. This device comprises an arm 26a secured to the support 25a and a plate 26b secured to the housing 28a. These two parts are articulated around a common axis 36. In addition, the arm 26a carries a finger 37 engaged in a slot 38 in the form of an arc of a circle formed in the plate 26b, this finger carrying itself a locking nut provided an operating lever 39.

Thus it is possible to tilt the housing 28b by pivoting it around the axis 36 and locking it in the desired position by means of the lever 39. This allows the corresponding apparatus to be used for polishing inclined edges and not just for the vertical chanting of a stone or the like.

However, in this variant, the arrangement of the device also remains the same as in the variant according to FIG. 3. Thus the support 25a is also arranged to be associated with the drive spindle 2 under the same conditions as above. As for the shaft of the grinding wheel 34a, it is mounted in the housing 28a in the same way and its drive is ensured by a hydraulic motor 32a, or the like, the housing of which is fixed on the end of the housing 28a which is opposite to the wheel 34a.
