Definitions

  • the invention relates to an arrangement and method for providing a message when loading service data for a terminal.
  • the invention is used in data centers for such devices as PC-frankers and postage meters and is optionally provided for postage scales and other mail processing devices.
  • the device allows an unsolicited delivery of news in communication between the device and a remote server despite a high volume of data and a large number of different devices that also access the remote server.
  • the purpose of the invention is the use of new services or a more cost-effective use of existing services of at least the service facility which operates the server.
  • EP-A-1 022 690 (Art. 54 (3) EPC) discloses a franking arrangement with advertising services.
  • the franking machine is connected to a remote services computer via the Internet.
  • US 4 122 532 (DE 28 03 982 C2) are already known postal processing equipment, postage meters with postage or postage scales, which can perform a postage calculation due to a weight value and for which the service of a Reloading a rate table for postage is caused by a remote data center at certain times. It is known from US 4,933,849 (DE 38 23 719 A1), the loading of various character patterns together with associated date on which the character pattern is entitled to be printed as a postmark. If the data exchange is initiated by the server of the data center, the franking machine must remain constantly turned on, which of course is disadvantageous.
  • the scale may store tables for several carriers, each with a corresponding minimum validity date. The minimum effective date is evaluated by the postage meter to form request data as needed, to load new rate table data and to update in the balance's memory.
  • German patent application DE 198 43 249 A1 proposes a "method for data entry " with time-decoupled loading and updating also from other service data.
  • the terminal contains a postage computer and a memory with storage areas for the corresponding service data. After detecting the input and storing a load requirement, checking the load requirement, a status report is made of the memory usage for service data and transmission of the status report to the data center. The latter makes recommendations for a future one Status of the memory usage in the terminal, due to a data center analysis of the service data memory usage status report, and transmits the recommendations to the terminal prior to actual loading.
  • service data should be understood as meaning all possible data, such as country code, data for plausible shipping parameter combinations, slogans for print options, help texts, cliché or image data, etc. US Pat.
  • EP 482 317 B1 discloses a telecommunications unit with a franking unit which stores a constant part of a franking image and assembles it with a transmitted essential part of the franking image which was requested together with a credit and a franking request.
  • US Pat. No. 5,365,044 discloses a chip card franking striper system which contains data for a postage credit and data for an individual advertising cliché, which is also printed on the franking strip. From US 4 831 554 (DE 37 12 100 A1) a postage meter message printing system known. From a remote data center, a message is requested, which is printed as advertising of a third party on a letter envelope.
  • US 5 852 813 (EP 780 803 A2) describes a method and arrangement for data entry into a franking machine.
  • Sub-images are transmitted from a data center and stored in the non-volatile memory of the franking machine.
  • a partial image is optionally positioned via a keyboard selected by the user to change the appearance of the franking imprint in predetermined areas.
  • the information content of a transmitted sub-image can enrich the areas with little information content, whereby sub-images can be superimposed.
  • the franking machine user must be informed about the remainder of the sub-pictures, which he has not yet loaded.
  • a data center sends a "I have something for you" message. If, based on the latter message, the user then makes a decision and presses a corresponding key, a loading process for a carrier information takes place fully automatically, in order to load corresponding additional service data.
  • the carrier information is data or information of a mail carrier, which is managed only by the data center. It is also intended to switch to standby mode if no postal item is to be franked with a postage value.
  • the use break or input break is detected in the franking mode and a standby flag is set. In the display mode, for example, a time can be displayed or any other display. With an actuating means, an instruction for calling an advertisement or information (carrier INFO) transmitted during a communication can be input.

  • a number of modems or other data transmission means adapted to the respective communication network are connected to the connector unit.
  • the connector unit includes at least one switch assembly.
  • a database is connected to a server which can make a selection of a message, which is preferably transmitted to the terminal together with the requested service data.
  • the message may be provided by one of the internal services or by external sources.
  • the connector unit automatically connects to the terminal.
  • the terminal is equipped to reproduce a message intended for the client (client) during or after the communication.
  • the selection of a message depends on the technical equipment of the terminal to perform a playback.
  • the technical format of the message depends on whether the message is being transmitted to a PC meter, to a postage meter or to another mail processing machine.
  • Postage meters, PC meters or other mail processing machines send request data to a service center to request services of any kind.
  • the transmission of data transmitted in connection with the requested service may take considerable time. During this time, information can be reproduced by the machine. This information can not be printed on a mailpiece, but only displayed on the display of the postage meter or reproduced acoustically.

  • advertising information can be transmitted.
  • the latter can then preferably be displayed after the transmission (off line) in the display of the franking machine.
  • a franking machine also retrieves and outputs data from an advertising message that is not related to the functions of printing, franking or mailing.
  • the advantage is that services of the server can be accessed at any time, regardless of franking.
  • an information is conveyed, which achieves a very high recognition for the services of a particular mail carrier or other service facility and by the possible facilitated control also the risk of confusion with other services is reduced.
  • the message transmitted with it is only intended for the device user (client) but not for the mail recipient.
  • both static data of the equipment and non-static usage data are to be considered below, which reflect the user behavior over a period of time.
  • the technical data include the device no., Software version no., Size of free memory space, the display type and other data and are automatically taken into account when selecting the message. Through the display - z. An LCD, for example, ensures that little power is consumed.
  • displayed texts and images can be displayed in a franking machine with a large LCD, while the representation in the form of scrolling text appears more suitable for a scale with a smaller display. Because of the much larger screen size or a large flat screen and due to the free space on the personal computer with franking programs (PC meter), there is an opportunity to increase the amount of data to be transmitted.
