- Document DE-A-3 027 549 describes a printing blanket which is formed of a laminate comprising a plurality of layers including base layers of fabric and which is capable of being fixed to a cylinder by its opposite edges as explained above.
- a cylinder with printing blanket as defined in the preamble of claim 1 is described, but this blanket is light and disposable once used and therefore does not consist of of a multiplicity of layers continuously surrounding the cylinder and allowing it to rotate at high speed without generating vibrations.
- the object of the present invention is to propose a cylinder coated with a blanket achieving this aim.
- the subject of the invention is a cylinder coated with a printing blanket which is held on the cylinder by completely and continuously surrounding this cylinder in the manner of a sleeve and which comprises a base layer adhered to the external surface of the cylinder, characterized in that said uninterrupted base layer is made of cellular rubber, has a modulus of elasticity in compression of between approximately 0.1 and 100 Megapascals (MPa), and is associated, on the side of its surface opposite to that adhered to the cylinder, to other layers without interruption excluding fabrics and comprising at least one layer of hard elastomer which is reinforced by fibers and which is associated with a lithographic or printing layer.

- the cellular rubber base layer has a thickness of between approximately 0.1 and 8 mm and is made integral with the external surface of the cylinder by a layer of adhesive of thickness between about 0.01 and 0.2 mm, and the aforementioned hard elastomer layer has a thickness of between about 0.05 and 0.5 mm.
- the thickness of the base layer is approximately 2.5 mm and that of the hard elastomer layer is approximately 0.25 mm.
- the modulus of elasticity in compression of the layer of cellular rubber is equal to approximately 9 megapascals.
- the percentage by volume and of gas enclosed in the layer of cellular rubber, preferably in closed cells is between approximately 10 and 80%.
- the aforementioned percentage of gas volume may advantageously be between 12 and 15%.
- the thickness of the lithographic layer is equal to or less than 0.25 mm, so as not to affect the advantages provided by the specific arrangement of the layers of the sleeve or blanket and in particular by the combination of the cellular rubber base layer and the hard elastomer layer.
- a blanket cylinder 1 which is full, but which could also be hollow, this cylinder being covered with a blanket 2 which is in the form of a sleeve completely and continuously surrounding said cylinder.
- the blanket or sleeve 2 may be fitted by any suitable method onto the cylinder 1 which may have a diameter of between 80 and 800 mm.
- the sleeve 2 comprises a base or lower layer 4 of cellular rubber adhered to the external surface 1a of the cylinder 1 by a layer of adhesive 3, the thickness of which may be between approximately 0.01 and 0.2 mm.
- the layer 4 of cellular rubber has a thickness of between 0.1 and 8 mm, preferably equal to 2.5 mm, and a modulus of elasticity preferably of between approximately 0.1 and 100 MPa, preferably equal to 9 Mpa.
- This layer 4 is naturally compressible and contains a certain volume of gas enclosed in open or closed cells. The percentage of the volume of gas enclosed in the cells can be between approximately 10 and 80%, and is preferably between 12 and 15%. It will be observed that layer 4 can optionally be reinforced with fibers or the like.
- this layer 4 is adhered a layer 5 of hard elastomer and which can optionally be reinforced with fibers.
- the thickness of this hard elastomer layer 5 can be between 0.05 and 0.5 mm.
- the blanket or sleeve 2 has an outer lithographic or printing layer 6 which may have a thickness of between 0.05 and 0.6 mm, and is preferably equal to or less than 0.25 mm.
- This lithographic layer 6 is made of a suitable elastomeric material, as known per se.
- All the above layers of the printing sleeve or blanket 2 are adhered to each other and to the external surface 1a of the cylinder 1 which, as can be understood by referring again to FIG. 1, forms with the sleeve 2 a assembly perfectly symmetrical to rotation and therefore generating no vibration and allowing a printing machine equipped with such cylinders to operate at high speed.
- the specific arrangement of the layers of the sleeve or blanket 2 according to this invention, and in particular the sandwich formed by the two layers 4 and 5, gives said sleeve an ideal behavior in the nip zone between two cylinders, with to know in particular an ideal compressibility and an almost total absence of shearing on the surface, that is to say of lateral displacement of the material of the sleeve, from where a perfect behavior of the rolls during rolling during the printing process.
