- the vertical component of the liquid metal poured into the casting space by a pocket located directly above it causes turbulence and a partial mixing of the fresh liquid metal with metal being solidified within the casting space, which is not desirable for the quality of the product obtained.
- the feed through the small faces causes only a minimum of turbulence in the bath of liquid metal, which is a factor for improving the homogeneity and therefore the quality of the thin strips obtained.

- the device is equipped with a flat cover 7 disposed above 1 liquid metal pouring space and in the immediate vicinity of its meniscus 4.
- This cover consists of a plate sized to cover the entire surface of the liquid metal and to take support, beyond the edges of the meniscus 4, on the surface of the cylinders 2.

Furthermore, a neutral gas is injected under overpressure into the volume delimited by the meniscus 4 and the refractory 8, by the tube 11 and the opening 9. The atmosphere is therefore expelled around the periphery of the cover 7, and the neutral gas escapes along the sides of the cover 7, as indicated by the arrows F.
- the cover 7 instead of resting directly on the surface of the cylinders 2, the cover 7 can then, if the overpressure of the neutral gas is sufficient, rest on a cushion of this gas.
- the cover 7 is placed, by its refractory lining, in the immediate vicinity of the meniscus 4 and therefore effectively performs its function of thermal shield for the bath of liquid metal 1.
- the injection of a neutral gas between the meniscus 4 and the refractory lining 8 protects the surface of the liquid metal against any risk of oxidation.
- the refractory lining 8 can be constituted by a set of fibrous refractory layers, providing good thermal insulation of the ingot mold and satisfactorily avoiding untimely heating of the cover 7.
- a coating left naked generates during its rise in temperature a gaseous release, mainly carbonaceous, which can be harmful to personnel and annoying for the proper functioning of the installation. In particular, it can disturb the functioning of metal level measuring devices optically.
- these coatings are rapidly degraded by projections of liquid metal, which are always to be feared if the cover 7 is placed at a very short distance from the meniscus as is desirable.
- the invention is not limited to the embodiment described and may include variant embodiments.
- it is not essential to inject a neutral gas between the meniscus 4 and the cover 7.
- the latter bears directly on the surface of the cylinders 2.
- It can then be advantageous, in order to limit its wear, to produce the part of the refractory lining 8 called to be in contact with the cylinders in a dense refractory.
