- the present invention relates to a device for measuring the passage of a determined length of a fabric in line with the needle of a sewing machine comprising, on the one hand, a pair of marks each constituting a contact element electric, an adjusting member for varying the spacing between these marks, these being intended to fix respectively the origin of the length to be measured and the end thereof, and, on the other hand, a closing member of contacts arranged between these pins, a mobile secured to one of the elements, pair of pins or contact closure member, means for bringing this mobile into engagement with the fabric to be sewn and causing it to be driven as a function of the advance of this fabric, and a return member constantly tending to bring this mobile in a position in which the mark fixing the origin of the length to be measured and said contact closure member are applied one against the other.
- the electrical signals indicating to the control circuit respectively the origin and the end of the passage of determined length of the fabric to the right of the needle of the sewing machine can be generated by mechanical, magnetic, electro-optical or electric means.
- the advantage of electrical means is that they do not have to use an intermediary and act directly on the electrical control circuit of the machine, which constitutes a guarantee of precision and operational safety that cannot be found with the other means mentioned above.
- the bar of the presser foot is electrically conductive and is connected on the one hand to a terminal the machine control circuit and, on the other hand, a first contact member, integral with the presser foot.
- a second organ of contact, isolated from the first and also integral with the presser foot, is connected to the other pole of this control circuit by a wire passing inside the tubular rod of this foot.

- the conductive pins integral with the respective slides are, from the electrical point of view, passive elements since they are not directly intended to be connected to the control circuit, but are indirectly, when the contact members are meet.
- This solution in which the two contact members are integral with the same element, requires isolating them from one another, multiplying the number of parts required and increasing the assembly time. It is easily understood that this solution was adopted insofar as it would have been even more complicated to connect the integral pins of the slides to one of the terminals of the control circuit.
- Another drawback of this device lies in the fact that it is relatively bulky and that, in order to come into engagement with the fabric, it is necessary to pinch the portion of fabric to be sewn, which complicates the work of the operator.

- a pedal 49 connected to a control 50 of a motor 51 for driving the machine.
- the operator chooses the length of the buttonhole using the drum 29 by turning the scale 30 until the value of this length is located opposite the reference 31. Then, the operator selects the type of buttonhole as well as its embodiment (automatic or manual) using the selection of memory 40 and, from this moment, it starts the machine by pressing the pedal 49. The machine then executes phase 1 of the program represented in the electronic memory 39.
- a pulse is produced by the pulse generator 46 and transmitted to the logic element ET 45. Since this pulse can occur before the end of a point, the detector position 43 of the needle bar communicates to the counter 42, the moment when the stitch being made is finished. At this time, a pulse appears at the output of block 44, so that the AND logic element 45 produces a signal which it transmits to the phase address counter 41, which indicates, in the phase address memory 38, the end of the current phase. If the operator has chosen an automatic working mode, the phase address memory 38 switches the electronic memory 39 to phase 2 and restarts the sewing process which had been interrupted at the end of phase 1. In the in the case of the so-called "manual" working mode, the operator must actuate the manual contact 48 to initiate the next phase.
- the machine brings the fabric T back by making a straight seam parallel to the zigzag seam of phase 1.
- the pinion 16 has not left the fabric, it is turned in the opposite direction, bringing the ankle 23 towards contact 28 and disarming spring 20.
- phase 3 is repeated, as in the case of the transition from phase 1 to phase 2 described above.
