Definitions
- the invention relates to a ball setting device of the type specified in the preamble of claim 1.
- a ball setting device of the type specified in the preamble of claim 1.
- Such a device is used by sport shooters with muzzle-loaders for use with black powder.
- the ramrod belonging to the weapon has to be gripped and guided through the free barrel length to the set ball in order to push it down to the load. Since only tightly fitting balls result in good hits, a relatively large amount of force is required and bruises and injuries sometimes do not fail. The latter is the most difficult and time consuming process when loading.
- the invention has for its object to provide a ball setting device of the type mentioned, which simplifies, facilitates and shortens the difficult, skillful and forceful process of setting tightly guided paving balls.
- a hardwood part on the setting anvil has a centrally arranged, flat and round hollow cavity on its upper surface.
- Different storey calibres with correspondingly dimensioned setting pieces can be exchangeably fastened to the driving stick on the driving stick.
- a setting stick that has been extended to match the entire barrel length can be replaced and is matched to the caliber of the projectile, can be attached to the driving stick as a ramrod.
- the bottom of a set is designed to be unscrewable and can be equipped with cleaning brushes, mop holders or ball pullers.
- An adapter sleeve provided with two internal threads at the end of the driving stick can be connected to the end of a ramrod which is part of the weapon and can also be longer.
- the ball set 1 shown in Figure 1 consists of round steel with a total length of approximately 360 mm and a diameter of approximately 7 mm. A part of it forms a lead screw with a length of approx. 220 mm. On the lead screw 2, an axially pierced cylindrical striking piece 3 is slidably provided. It is formed by a round steel piece of approx. 50 mm in length and approx. 30 mm in diameter with a mass of approx. 250 grams. The striker 3 can easily slide up and down on the lead screw.
- the path of the striking piece 3 is limited by two thickenings which have stop faces and form a setting anvil 4 and a driving anvil 5.
- the driving anvil has a length of approx. 10 mm and a diameter of approx. 14 mm and is firmly connected to the lead screw
- the setting anvil has a length of 25 mm and a diameter of 12 mm and is screwed on.
- the striking piece 3 is easy to move with the thumb and index finger in order to push it firmly against both the setting anvil and the driving anvil so that its mass acts as a hammer.
- the basic shape of the striking piece is cylindrical. For better handling, it is tapered towards the center and has transverse grooves that increase grip.
- the drilling diameter is expanded somewhat, so that small material deformations when striking cannot impair the free sliding of the striking piece on the lead screw.
- the lead screw is extended beyond the driving anvil 5 by a section of approximately 125 mm forming a driving stick 7.
- An external thread M6 is cut on both ends of the round steel rod. At the free end of the lead screw, it is used to hold a cylindrical piece of round steel (approx. 25 mm long, diameter approx. 12 mm with blind hole and internal thread M6) which forms the anvil 4. This piece of round steel is embedded in a hardwood handle 8 fastened thereon.
- the hardwood handle of the set anvil has a flat cavity 9 in the center on its upper side. It serves as a centering aid when the ball is first hit.
- This handle made of hardwood or plastic is non-positively screwed to the lead screw by means of a variant (not shown in the drawing) as a self-tapping threaded bushing in such a way that a covering of the bushing opening or washer interposed on the underside of the grip piece acts as a setting anvil.
- Surface for the striking piece is formed. In its position, this corresponds to the annular end face of the anvil 4 that is advanced when struck.
- a washer 10 of approximately 24 mm in diameter adheres to the lower surface of the driving anvil 5 towards the driving stick 7 and serves to limit the driving process. It has a glued-on leather plate to protect the barrel muzzle.
- the other end of the rod is provided at the end 11 of the driving stick 7 for receiving a ball setting piece 12 made of brass with a thread M6, which has a corresponding hollow rounding 13 at the end of the joint for adaptation to the ball to be set.
- the interchangeable setting pieces can have diameters of 7.5 mm, 10 mm or 14 mm to cover the corresponding spherical calibers.
- the replaceable setting pieces can have lengths of approx. 25 mm to approx. 125 mm.
- the setting piece 12 is interchangeable with a setting stick 14, as shown in Figure 2. It has a length of 135 mm and is provided with a replaceable base 15 at its end.
- the replaceable, preferably made of brass setting piece is in particular provided with a cap, for example made of plastic or hardwood.
- the setting stick 14 is in particular provided in such a length that with screwed-on floor or setting piece all common muzzle-loading pistols can be loaded without the ramrod provided.
- FIG. 3 An adapter 16 for a ramrod is shown in FIG. 3. It is cylindrical and has two internal threads. One of the internal threads matches the (external) thread at the end 11 of the driving stick 7 in FIG. 1.
- FIGS. 4a and 4b show accessories (brush 17 or ball puller 18) which, with a corresponding thread instead of the base 15, can optionally be inserted into the end of the setting stick 14 (FIG. 2) for convenient use.
- the ball setter 1 is gripped with thumb and forefinger on the striker 3 and held so that, due to gravity, the anvil 4 slides down and lies lightly on the ball to be loaded.
- the ball that still protrudes centers the anvil by protruding somewhat into the central hollow curve of the outer part of the hardwood handle.
- the striking piece is held just below the driving anvil 5 and the device is held in an approximately vertical position (FIG. 5a). A small blow with the striker down will effortlessly drive the ball into the trains ( Figure 5b).
- the ball is now approx. 120 mm deep in the barrel. It is now pressed in and can be easily brought to the load in a traditional manner by driving with the ramrod ( Figure 5d).
- Another advantage according to the invention results from the ball drawing process. Again and again it happens that no powder has been loaded beforehand or other circumstances require the bullet loaded down to the bottom of the barrel and the plaster to be pulled out of the barrel. For this purpose, from time immemorial, a ball set was screwed onto the ramrod, pushed onto the ball and turned, so that the corkscrew spirals and screw thread firmly grasp the same. Pulling out the ramrod with the wedged ball, which protrudes only briefly from the muzzle, generally proves to be cumbersome and difficult. According to the invention, an adapter sleeve provided with nut threads is screwed and fastened to the end of the drive stick of the device.
- the second thread of the sleeve grips the screw thread of the ram end. If the striking piece of the device according to the invention is hit upwards against the setting anvil, the ball is moved upwards and, once released, can be pulled out by pulling on the wooden handle of the device.
- the ball setting device enables handling which is suitable in any way even for precision firearms, the precision barrels being spared as much as possible in order to achieve exactly the same prerequisites for all successive firing shots, so that the inevitable "scatter" is kept to a minimum.
- Markings or limiting sleeves which are attached to the propelling or setting stick in a suitable manner, help to prevent the device from penetrating too deeply into the barrel.
- the propelling and / or setting stick are preferably provided with a sheathing, which likewise consists of plastic or the like.
