Definitions
- the present invention relates to a quick-dissolving additive for aluminum melts, a process for its production and its use for introducing alloying elements into aluminum.
- the alloy elements are usually added to the liquid metal bath in solid form.
- Aluminum is alloyed e.g. with magnesium to achieve better strengths, with silicon to improve castability and strength, with manganese and chromium to increase strength and corrosion resistance.
- a whole series of other alloying elements are known for specifically influencing the alloy properties.
- the alloy metals in the form of master alloys which have a higher melting point than the base metal, have previously been added in order to achieve rapid dissolution.
- the disadvantage of these master alloys is their limited alloy metal content.
- the standard alloys for aluminum alloy only contain a maximum of 20% silicon, up to 20% chromium or up to 50% Mn in addition to aluminum.
- DE-A 25 11 351 discloses mixtures which consist of at least one alloy metal such as manganese, chromium or iron and about 0.1 to 2.5% by weight of KBR 4 , and K s Na a Ba 2 (SiF 6 ) 6 as a non-hygroscopic salt flux.
- the use of alkali aluminum fluorides such as NagAtF s is rejected as unusable.
- FR-A 21 70 186 mixtures are described which consist of finely divided manganese and a fluoride in a certain ratio.
- Sodium or potassium fluorides are also mentioned as fluorides.
- these salts have a high melting point of about 1000 ° C and can therefore not dissolve in an aluminum melt of about 800 ° C, but are present as a solid.
- FR-A 23 12 570 describes master alloy pellets for the production of aluminum alloys which, in addition to the alloy metal, contain a flux which releases a gas, such as chlorine or HCl, in the molten metal.
- a gas such as chlorine or HCl
- FR-A 21 45 943 describes a process for adding manganese to molten aluminum, the manganese being introduced into the melt together with a flux such as NaCl, KCl or cryolite.
- the object of the present invention was therefore to develop an additive for aluminum melts which does not have the disadvantages of the prior art mentioned, but which also enables complete and rapid dissolution in the liquid base metal even with a higher concentration of alloy metal.
- the additive comprises 2 to 50% by weight of a component A consisting of alkali-aluminum tetra-fluoride and / or a salt mixture containing alkali-aluminum tetra-fluoride and 50 to 98% by weight of a component B. from one or more alloy metal (s), the ligating metal (s) being different from aluminum, and that components A and B are intimately mixed.
- a component A consisting of alkali-aluminum tetra-fluoride and / or a salt mixture containing alkali-aluminum tetra-fluoride and 50 to 98% by weight of a component B.
- a component A consisting of alkali-aluminum tetra-fluoride and / or a salt mixture containing alkali-aluminum tetra-fluoride and 50 to 98% by weight of a component B.
- the additives according to the invention have an unexpectedly high dissolution rate even when the alloy metal
- the quick-dissolving additive for aluminum according to the present invention consists of 2 to 50% by weight of component A and 50-98% by weight of component B.
- alkali-aluminum tetrafluoride and / or a salt mixture containing alkali-aluminum tetrafluoride can be used, insofar as this does not introduce unacceptable amounts of impurities into the base metal when using the additive according to the invention.
- the melting point of the salt or salt mixture should not be higher than that of the base metal.
- alkali aluminum tetrafluoride a mixture of alkali and aluminum tetrafluoride can preferably also be used.
- Preferred salt mixtures containing alkali-aluminum tetrafluoride are mixtures of alkali-aluminum tetrafluoride and other salts, in particular fluoride and / or chloride salts, in which the proportion of alkali-aluminum tetrafluoride is at least 50% by weight.
- alkali compounds basically all alkali salts of aluminum tetrafluoride can be used, but the sodium and / or potassium salts are to be regarded as preferred.
- component A in the additive should be as low as possible with good dissolving properties of the alloy component (s). Depending on the density of the alloy metal, 2% by weight of component A is sufficient. In the range from 5 to 25% by weight of component A, the best combination of optimal dissolution rate and maximum concentration of the alloy component in the additive is achieved.
- Component A is particularly preferably present in an additive according to the invention in an amount of 10 to 20% by weight.
- Component B which is contained in the additive in a proportion of 50 to 98% by weight, preferably 75 to 95% by weight and particularly preferably 80 to 90% by weight, consists of one or more alloy metal (s) .
- alloy metal s
- all alloying elements can be used here, with chromium, manganese and iron being preferred due to their technical importance.
- other alloying elements such as Ni, Co, Cu, Ag, Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Mo and W can also be contained in the additive.
- the alloy metal does not have to be in pure form, but alloys or mixtures of several metals can also be used, provided that this does not cause any undesirable impurities in the base metal.
- both component A and component B are present in intimately mixed form.
- the additive is preferably in compressed or compacted form, e.g. used as briquettes, tablets or pellets or the like, the size of these bodies can be varied within wide limits. It is only essential that the bodies have a sufficiently high sinking rate in the aluminum bath and that they are not too thick to ensure an acceptable dissolution rate.
- the maximum thickness of the body can be assumed to be 50 mm, while the preferred range is between 5 and 25 mm.
- the additive can also be in the form of a filled wire, the agent being encased in a suitable material.
- care must be taken that it quickly dissolves in the melt in order to release the additive and that there are no undesired impurities in the aluminum bath to be alloyed. It has proven to be particularly advantageous to use the base metal.
- the additive according to the invention is prepared by intimately mixing the powdered components A and B and ggt. by pressing with the usual technical devices such as Tablet or briquette presses or by inserting them into the cored wire.
- the particle size of component A should be ⁇ 1 mm, preferably ⁇ 150 ⁇ m and that of component B should also be ⁇ 1 mm, preferably ⁇ 150 ⁇ m, in order to give the shaped body a correspondingly large inner surface after the subsequent pressing or compacting, which in turn is essential for the dissolution rate.
- prior comminution is necessary, which, if necessary, may consist of grinding in the usual mills such as ball, vibrating or impact mills.
- the use of the additive according to the invention consists in the fact that it is added to the liquid aluminum to be alloyed in an amount of 0.01 to 25% by weight, whereby it dissolves completely and without formation of residues in it and forms a homogeneous alloy.
- Chromium powder ⁇ 150 ⁇ m, potassium aluminum fluoride powder (KAIF Q ) ⁇ 150 ⁇ m and aluminum powder with a grain size of 430-75 ⁇ m were used for the mixture compacts.
- the intimate mixture was compressed in a tablet press to approx. 70-80% of the theoretical density.
- two commercial products were used according to the prior art.
- Table 1 shows the mixtures used, the density of the compacts and their solubility behavior.
- Experiments 1 to 4 in which the additives according to the invention were used, show the dissolution rate as a function of the potassium aluminum fluoride content of the mixtures.
- the experiments show, with a potassium-aluminum tetrafluoride content of 14.1% by weight (cf. experiment 4), the chromium dissolved completely after only two minutes.
- the chromium is completely dissolved in the base metal after only ten minutes (cf. Experiment 2).
- Trials 5 and 6 were carried out using commercial products in accordance with the prior art carried out. Both products only contain approx. 75% by weight of chromium and approx. 25% by weight of binder. In spite of the high proportion of binder, only 9% and only 60% of chromium yields are recorded in experiment 5 after two minutes. Even after 10 minutes, only 5% are applied in experiment 5 and only 76% in experiment 6. Only after 20 minutes with the upstream intensive stirring phase are 100% yield achieved in experiment 5 and 88% yield in experiment 6. In contrast, experiment 4 shows that, despite the significantly lower binder content, the chromium is completely dissolved after only five minutes. In experiment 7, an additive is used whose binder consists of potassium aluminum tetrafluoride and aluminum.
