Definitions

  • the invention relates to mass correspondence, that is to say letters addressed to a large number of recipients and which may include, in addition to the addresses, other personalized particulars typed by the printer of a computer or of equipment. electro-compatable or other.
  • fold When the document, hereinafter referred to as "fold” or “insert”, to be placed in an envelope has sufficiently reduced dimensions, it can be of format at most equal to that of said envelope. In this case it can be bundled, of manufacture, in continuous band, with two other bands intended to constitute, respectively the bottom and the tops of the envelopes to form a continuous assembly of folds or "mailers” served by the printer, at the 'user, through the upper strip thanks to known arrangements (carbonaceous areas, chemical or self-reproducing papers, etc.). Another possibility consists in assembling the strips, at the user's place, after the strip of inserts has passed through the printer as described in FR-A 2 365 491 in the name of the same applicant.
  • the only currently known means consists, after placing in the unit, of using a traditional folding machine with set of plates, alternative or rotary, followed by a machine pocket. But, while the passage of the strip of inserts in the printer can be carried out at increasingly high speeds (up to 2400 m / h), the folding and the placing in pockets cannot even reach half that speed with the most efficient machines. It is then necessary to provide a plurality of these machines.
  • the object of the invention is to realize, at high speed, the folding in accordion of each insert, after the passage in the printer but before the unit setting, so that its height is at most equal to that of the envelope, the folding being carried out along two transverse lines of each of said inserts, after optionally a longitudinal folding of the continuous strip of inserts.
  • the unfolded insert then has a surface that can approach three times (or six times if there is a longitudinal folding) that of the envelope.
  • the method consists in driving this strip on a conveyor at a determined speed V which can be imposed by a machine placed upstream, a printer for example, to mark on each insert the two lines folding, then abruptly decelerating the advancement to a speed V close to V / 3, so as to obtain a pocket-like undulation of the strip, means being provided for then folding said pocket flat on the carrier.
  • the pocket can be folded upstream or downstream depending on the shaping to be carried out then, but very generally the folding down will be done upstream, so that the last two flaps of the insert are placed under the first, which greatly facilitates the engagement of the pleated strip in the fixed elements of the various shaping stations which follow, by eliminating practically any risk of jamming.
  • the invention also relates to a device for implementing the method.
  • a strip 10 provided with driving perforations 11 along its two lateral margins is a continuous strip of prints 12 separated from each other by a transverse line of detachable perforations and / or folding 13.
  • Traditionally such a strip is delivered to the user, folded in accordion along transverse lines 13, in a packet such as that referenced 20 in FIG. 2.
  • each print 12 When each print 12 is a document to be placed in an envelope and it has a larger surface than that of the envelope, it must be folded (accordion, rolled fold or cross fold). Until now, this operation required the use of a plate-folding, rotary or alternative folder, after unitization.
  • the fastest known machines do not allow a rate comparable to that of printing machines (conventional printers or computer printers).
  • the invention consists in carrying out the folding of each print before the unitization so as to obtain a continuous strip of folded prints. However, it is necessary to limit oneself to a folding of each print into a three-part accordion, after, possibly, a conventional longitudinal folding.
  • the process consists in driving the strip at a determined speed V, first in a pre-marking station for the two transverse folds 14 delimiting the central flap 15, then on a conveyor where it undergoes a sudden slowdown over a short distance until at a speed V ′ close to V / 3, so as to form a pocket 16, the last two flaps of each print coming to slide under the first flap, means being provided for folding and keeping said pocket flat on the conveyor .
  • the marking of the transverse folds 14 can be carried out mechanically by grooving for example, but also by physicochemical means by the formation of softening lines, by linear coating of a commercial solvent for example.
  • Figure 2 is a schematic perspective of a device for implementing the method.
  • the strip the progress of which is indicated by the arrows F i , is represented at its entry upstream of the device, but is simply symbolized by two lines in phantom 21 a and 21 b on its course at l inside the device.
  • the strip is brought to the device in a package 20 folded in an accordion along the transverse lines 13, two successive lines 13 delimiting a print 12.
  • the first station 22 of the device is a conventional station for longitudinal folding. In this case the strip is no longer entrained thereafter only on one of its lateral sides unless a double alignment of drive perforations is provided on either side of the longitudinal center line.
  • the strip then passes through a station 23 and 24 for pre-marking the two transverse folds 14 of each print 12.
  • rollers of the station 22 for longitudinal folding and those of the station 23, 24 for marking the folds 14 rotate at the same tangential speed V which is equal to the running speed of a pin driver 26 disposed at the entry d 'a belt conveyor designated as a whole by the reference 25.
  • a pin driver 26 disposed at the entry d 'a belt conveyor designated as a whole by the reference 25.
  • the speed V can be imposed by a machine situated upstream when the strip 10 is brought directly from this machine and not in bundles 20.
  • the belts comprise two lateral belts 28 driven at speed V 'from one end to the other of the conveyor and a plurality of central belts forming, by virtue of an intermediate axis 29, a set of upstream belts 30 driven at speed V and a set of downstream belts 31 driven at speed V '.
  • a sequential blower directed upwards, materialized by the arrow F 2 in FIG. 1, lifts the strip into a pocket 16, the bottom of which corresponds to the fold line 14 located between the first and the second part of the print concerned.
  • a reel constituted here by a plurality of small rollers 33 arranged on the crank pin of a crank whose trajectory is symbolized by the circular arrows Fs, then layers the pocket on the strip before its engagement under the rollers 32. It is of course necessary that each turn of the reel corresponds to the scrolling of an insert, in other words that the number N of turns of the reel per unit of time is equal to V / L.
  • the central belts 30 of the upstream game are perforated belts with suction system on at least part of their course, except at the blower, in order to keep the strip, before and after its pleating, flat on the carrier.
  • the pleated strip is entrained in the various conventional shaping stations: cutting of edges, insertion between two bands constituting the top and bottom of the envelope after, or before, the uniting by breaking or cutting.
  • the claimed process aims mainly to allow enveloping at high speed, but of course, this particular shaping of a strip can find other applications without going beyond the domain. of the invention.
