Definitions

  • the invention relates to a handle for a steam iron with the features specified in the preamble of claim 1.
  • a handle for a steam iron with the features specified in the preamble of claim 1.
  • Such a handle is known from DE-GM 78 15 717. At its front end it has a cavity in which an electrical switch is arranged, the actuation of which controls the steam supply.
  • the handle wall covering the cavity is made so thin that it can be pressed in like an elastic membrane.
  • the switch button of the elastic switch is located under the membrane and can be depressed by pressing in the membrane.
  • a push button can also be inserted into the membrane, which makes it easier to find the position of the membrane that is most favorable for the switch actuation.
  • the known handle has the disadvantage that the switch is difficult to operate when the membrane is strong, while it is easy to operate when the membrane is weak, but the weak membrane tends to tear, especially if it is inserted anyway by inserting one Push button is already weakened. If the membrane is torn, there is no alternative but to replace the iron handle with a new one.
  • the invention has for its object to remedy the disadvantages mentioned by an improved handle that allows easy switch operation on the one hand and on the other hand survives a large number of switching operations without damage.
  • the inserted switch is no longer actuated via a membrane, which is an integral part of the handle wall, but by means of a separate switch button, which is inserted into a section of the handle wall at the point where the membrane is located in the known handle .
  • the switch button is an i.w. rigid, stable, durable component. Their mobility, which is required for a switch actuation, results from the fact that it is articulated with its front end to the end cap, which closes the cavity in the handle, and rests with the thin, elastic lip on the edge of the cutout in the handle wall. Due to its elasticity, this lip enables the switch button to be pressed a little into the handle against the restoring force of the lip.
  • the resilient design of the handle wall in the region of the cavity makes a further contribution to the mobility of the switch button; to achieve easy switching, the handle wall at this point, i.e. in the vicinity of the switch button, does not have to be as thin as in the prior art, because the handle wall does not have to enable the switch in the handle cavity alone.
  • the lip of the switch button also ensures that the cavity in the handle is protected against splashing water.
  • this is provided with a projection which engages under the edge of the cutout of the handle wall and prevents it in connection with the articulation of the switch button on the end cap of the handle that the switch button springs back out of the cutout in which it is inserted.
  • the switch button is prevented from falling into the handle by the circumferential lip in connection with the switch located under the switch button and with the tongue and groove connection between the switch button and end cap.
  • the tongue and groove connection is expediently designed such that the switch button is connected to the groove and the end cap to the matching tongue.
  • the spring can then be a section of a projecting edge of the end cap, which is inserted into the front opening for the positive connection of the end cap to the handle.
  • the switch button of the electrical switch should preferably be arranged such that it is actuated by the rear part of the switch button because the possible stroke of the switch button is greatest there. Since microswitches are particularly suitable as electrical switches for the purpose in question here, the required stroke of the switch key is generally not great.
  • the wall of the handle should preferably be made of a somewhat resilient foamed plastic (e.g. polyurethane), because this gives the handle a pleasant, soft grip, is electrically insulating and heat-insulating and gives the intended purpose to the edge of the cutout above the cavity in the front part of the handle Indulgence.
  • the switch button should consist of non-foamed, thermoplastic, which gives it dimensional stability and enables inexpensive production by injection molding. The switch button can then also be felt because it differs in material from the rest of the handle. This differentiation can be increased by deliberately different surface textures (e.g. switch button smooth or corrugated, other handle with a slightly rough, grained surface).
  • the handle shown has a cavity 1 in its front part, which is closed by a removable, in particular unscrewable end cap 2. At the rear end, the handle merges into a base 3, by means of which it can be attached to an iron.
  • the base has a vertical bore 4, into which a fastening screw can be inserted.
  • the end cap 2 has on its inside an extension 5 protruding in the longitudinal direction of the handle into the cavity 1 as a carrier for an electrical microswitch 6.
  • the extension 5 has two parallel pins 7 extending laterally to the longitudinal direction of the handle, on which the microswitch 6, the has two corresponding bores 8 in its housing, is attached.
  • the handle has the shape of a triangle in cross section with rounded edges and slightly curved side walls.
  • the switch button 10 of the microswitch 6 faces one of these side walls, namely the side wall 9, which is located on the left-hand side when looking from the base 3 to the end cap 2 and faces obliquely upwards.
  • the side wall 9 is provided with an elongated cutout 12 in which a switch button 13 is inserted.
  • the cutout 12 extends from the front edge 11 of the cavity 1 in the longitudinal direction of the handle and is delimited by two parallel longitudinal edges and an arc connecting the longitudinal edges at the rear end of the cutout 12.
  • the switch button 13 closes the cutout 12 totally and accordingly has two parallel longitudinal edges 14 which lie against the longitudinal edges of the cutout 12, at the rear end an arcuate edge section 15 which lies against the arcuate edge section of the cutout 12, and a rectilinear front edge section 16 which is the End cap 2 rests.
  • the switch button 13 is thicker than the side wall 9 of the handle, at least in the edge area, and rests with an elastically flexible lip 17 of the side wall 9 in the edge area around the cutout 12.
  • the switch button is provided over its entire width with a groove 18 which is open towards the front and into which a section of an annular projection 19 formed in the abutment surface of the end cap 2 is fitted as a spring.
  • the switch button 13 is articulated around this tongue and groove connection when depressed.
  • the switch button 10 of the microswitch rests on the underside of the switch button 13 near its rear end or is at most very close to it.
  • the microswitch 6 is actuated by depressing the switch button 13.
  • Depressing the switch button 13 is possible because of the elastically flexible lip 17 and can be supported by a certain flexibility of the edge of the cutout 12; for this purpose at least the wall 9 of the cavity is formed from an elastically resilient plastic.
  • the switch button 13 is reset by the resilient property of the lip 17, possibly also the side wall 9 of the handle, and can be supported by the springback of the switch button 10 of the microswitch. So that the switch button cannot slide outwards from the cutout, it is additionally secured, in addition to the tongue and groove 19 connection, by a projection 20 provided at the rear end of the switch button 13, which engages under the edge of the cutout 12.
  • the switch button 13 In order to be able to feel the switch button 13 with the thumb, it is provided with a recess 21 on its upper side.
