Definitions
- the invention relates to a process for detaching, in particular, zirconium oxide and / or titanium oxide-containing molding sand residues on castings in molten salts, which essentially consist of alkali hydroxides and fluorides, at 400 to 800 ° C.
- the castings are often treated for many hours, even days, in hot aqueous sodium hydroxide solution or with aqueous hydrofluoric acid (for example foundry 66 [1979], 406 or Fonderie 227 [1965], 29).
- FR-PS 2 253 845 10 to 40% borate and 0.1 to 10% silicon carbide are added to detach oxide layers of a salt melt from alkali hydroxide. Remnants of molding sand cannot be removed with it.
- US Pat. No. 2,601,864 also describes descaling baths from molten alkali and alkaline earth metal chlorides, which may contain boric acid and silicon carbide to influence the settling of the sludge.
- the castings which have mold sand residues, are introduced into a melt, which consists of 55-97% by weight of alkali metal hydroxide and 3 to 45% by weight of one or more fluorides of the elements of the 1st to 3rd main group of the periodic system of the elements and / or of zinc and additionally contains, based on the total weight of the above-mentioned melt, 1 to 40% by weight of a boron oxygen and / or boron fluorine compound.
- a melt which consists of 55-97% by weight of alkali metal hydroxide and 3 to 45% by weight of one or more fluorides of the elements of the 1st to 3rd main group of the periodic system of the elements and / or of zinc and additionally contains, based on the total weight of the above-mentioned melt, 1 to 40% by weight of a boron oxygen and / or boron fluorine compound.
- Salt melts which contain sodium hydroxide, sodium fluoride and anhydrous borax in a weight ratio of 3: 1: 1 at temperatures of 650 to 750 ° C., or 80 to 95% by weight sodium hydroxide, 5 to 20% by weight calcium and / or barium fluoride and contain up to 10 wt .-% borax.
- the method according to the invention avoids the problems mentioned in the prior art and leads to excellent cleaning of the castings in a short time. It has a number of technical and economic advantages.
- hydroxide, fluoride or borate melts are not optimally suitable for dissolving zirconium or titanium oxide-containing molding sands by themselves, but only the combination of all three components in a defined weight ratio brings about this and leads to an optimum of dissolving power with only slight corrosion attack leads the cast steel.
- a mixture of alkali hydroxide and a fluoride is suitable for removing sand residues at 400 to 800 ° C.
- the addition of a boron-oxygen compound also reduces the corrosion attack and considerably increases the solvency, so that the castings can be cleaned and bare metal removed from the bath after treatment times of 10-60 minutes.
- the parts are completely free of molding sand.
- the batch is removed from the melt by means of the lifting device, driven over a water-filled quenching tank and quenched there.
- the castings treated in this way are shiny metallic and completely cleaned of molding sand.
