Description
Die Erfindung bezieht sich auf die Herstellung von mehrwertigen Alkoholen, deren Äther und Ester und
von Oligomeren solcher Alkohole durch Umsetzung von Kohlenoxiden und Wasserstoff bei erhöhter
Temperatur unter Druck in Gegenwart eines bestimmten Rhodiumcarbonylkatalysators.
Es ist bekannt, daß monofunktionelle Verbindungen, wie Methanol, durch Umsetzung von Kohlenmonoxid
und Wasserstoff bei erhöhten Drucken, z. B. bis zu etwa 1000 ata, und bei Temperaturen von etwa 250 bis 5000C
erhalten werden können, wobei Mischungen von Kupfer-, Chrom- und Zinkoxid als Katalysator verwendet
werden. Aus der US-PS 24 51 333 ist die Umsetzung von Formaldehyd, Kohlenmonoxid und Wasserstoff mit jo
Hydrierungskatalysatoren zu Polyhydroxyverbindungen bekannt. Auch soll sich Formaldehyd aus Kohlenmonoxid
und Wasserstoff bei erhöhten Drücken herstellen lassen; jedoch konnten wiederholte Versuche
dies nicht bestätigen, da man auf diese Weise keine j-, wesentliche Menge des gewünschten Produkts erhielt.
Es ist allgemein bekannt, daß die bisher beschriebenen Verfahren zur Herstellung von Formaldehyd aus
Kohlenmonoxid und Wasserstoff unter hohen D-ücken entweder undurchführbar sind oder aber zu einer 41)
unbedeutenden Ausbeute an Formaldehyd führen.
In der GB-PS 6 55 237 wird die Reaktion von Kohlenmonoxid und Wasserstoff bei erhöhten Drücken
und Temperaturen, beispielsweise über 1500 ata und bis zu 4000C, unter Verwendung bestimmter Hydrierungs- 4>
katalysatoren beschrieben wie kobalthaltige Verbindungen (US-PS 25 34 018, 25 70 792 und 26 36 046, wo in
den Beispielen lediglich kobalthaltige Katalysatoren erprobt wurden).
Es ist auch bekannt, daß als Katalysator für die Herstellung von Methan entsprechend der Reaktion

in erster Linie Nickel verwendet wird (s. K i r k - O t h m
e r, Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology, 2. Ausgabe, Band 4, Seiten 452 bis 453, John Wiley and Sons, New
York, 1064).
Bisher erfolgte die Synthese von mehrwertigen Alkoholen durch Oxidation von Erdölprodukten, so daß
eine andere Rohstoffquelle für diese Synihesen anstrebenswert wäre.
Aufgabe der Erfindung ist min ein Verfahren zur
Herstellung von mehrwertigen aliphatischen Alkoholen und deren Äther, Ester und Oligomeren, und zwar vor
allem von Alkanpolyolen, insbesondere von Alkandiolen und -triolen mit etwa 2 oder 3 Kohlenstoffatomen
und deren Äther, Ester und Oligomeren aus einer anderen Rohstoffbasis als Erdöl, nämlich aus Kohlenoxiden
und Wasserstoff.
Das erfindungsgemäße Verfahren geht aus von der Umsetzung von Kohlenoxiden mit Wasserstoff bei etwa
100 bis 375°C unter einem Druck von etwa 70 bis 3515 atü in Anwesenheit eines Rhodiumcarbonyl-Komplexes
als Katalysator, welcher im Infrarotspektrum intensive Banden bei etwa 1868±10cm-', bei etwa
1838 ± 10 cm-1 und bei etwa 1785±10cm-' bei einem
Druck von wenigstens etwa 35 atü besitzt. Es ist dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man als Lösungsmittel
)'-Butyrolakton oder ό-Valerolakton verwendet.
Die Rhodiumcarbonyl-Klusterverbindung weist dieses Infrarotspektrum entweder während der Synthese
oder bei einer Temperatur und/oder einem Druck unter der Reaktionstemperatur bzw. dem Reaktionsdruck auf.
Es wurde gefunden, daß durch das erfindungsgemäß angewandte Lösungsmittel Rhodiumverluste im wesentlichen
verhindert werden können. Von den beiden Lösungsmitteln wird y-Butyrolakton bevorzugt, una
zwar nicht aufgrund seiner besseren Lösungsfähigkeit, sondern aufgrund seiner geringeren Neigung, während
der Reaktion zu polymerisieren und flüssige Polyester zu bilden. Derartige Polyester sind nicht wünschenswert,
obwohl sie weder die Reaktion noch die durch Verwendung dieses Lösungsmittels erreichten Vorteile
beeinträchtigen. Zweckmäßigerweise wird die Reaktion unter solchen Bedingungen durchgeführt, daß diese
Polymerisation minimal gehalten wird. Es wurde festgestellt, daß die Polyester zwar bei dieser Reaktion
als Lösungsmittel wirken können, sollten jedoch in gewissen Abständen aus der Reaktion entfernt werden,
damit sie sich nicht ungebührlich im Reaktionsmedium ansammeln.
Nach P. Chini »The Closed Metal Carbonyl Clusters«, Review (1968), Inorganica Chemica Acta,
Seiten 31 bis 50 ist eine Metallkluslerverbindung eine »begrenzte Gruppe von Metallatomen, die vollständig,
hauptsächlich oder zumindest in einem wesentlichen Maß durch direkte Bindungen zwischen den Metallatomen
zusammengehalten wird, obwohl auch einige Nicht-Metall-Atome eng mit dem Kluster verbunden
sein können«. Die angewandten Katalysatoren enthalten Rhodium, das an Rhodium oder ein anderes Metall
wie Kobalt und/oder Iridium gebunden ist. Die bevorzugten Kluster sind diejenigen mit Rhodium-Bindüngen,
dessen Carbonyl »endständig« sein, eine »Kantenbrücke« und/oder eine »Oberflächenbrücke«
bilden kann. Die Verbindungen können Sauerstoff und Kohlenstoff auch in anderer Form als in Form von
Carbonyl enthalten. Sie haben ζ. Β. folgende Struktur:

Die Katalysatoren sind ionisch und können mit jedem Gegenion kombiniert sein, z. B. Rhodium, Wasserstoff,
Ammoniak, ein- oder mehrwertige Metalle (Lithium, Natrium, Kalium, Rubidium, Cäsium, Beryllium, Magnesium,
Calcium, Strontium, Barium, Radium, Scandium, Yttrium, Seltene Erdmetalle, Titan, Zirkonium, Hafnium,
Mangan, Rhenium, Eisen, Ruthenium, Osmium, Kobalt, Iridium, Nickel, Palladium, Kupfer, Silber, Gold, Bor,
Aluminium, Gallium, Indium und Thallium) oder verschiedene organische Verbindungen, beispielsweise
Liganden. Die organischen Gegenionen können komplexgebunden
sein.
Solche Rhodiumkluster-Komplexe werden durch die Verreinigung von organischen Liganden mit Rhodiumcarbonyl
in Lösung gebildet.
Die organischen Liganden enthalten wenigstens ein Stickstoffatom (Lewis-Basen-Stickstoffatom) und/
oder wenigstens ein Sauerstoffatom (Lewis-Basen-Sauerstoffatom), z. B. 1 bis 4, vorzugsweise 1 bis
3, insbesondere 1 bis 2 Lewis-Basen-Atome. Die organischen Ligaiiuen werden mehrzähnig genannt

enthaltende Verbindungen.
Der Begriff »Kohlenoxid« bezieht sich hier auf Kohlenmonoxid und auf Mischungen von Kohlendioxid
und Kohlenmonoxid, die entweder bereits in die Reaktionszone eingeführt oder aber darin gebildet
werden.
Die Menge des verwendeten Katalysators ist nicht kritisch und kann sehr unterschiedlich sein. Im
allgemeinen wird das erfindungsgemäße Verfahren in Anwesenheit von etwa 1 · 10-6Gew.-% Rh bis etwa 30
Gew.-% Rh, bezogen auf das Gesamtgewicht der Reaktionsmischung, angewendet; bevorzugt wird im
allgemeinen eine Katalysatorkonzentration von etwa 1 · 10-5bisetwal · 10-'Gew.-% Rh.
Die bevorzugten Arbeitstemperaturen liegen zwischen etwa 150 und 3000C, insbesondere zwischen etwa
190 und 275° C, und der bevorzugt angewandte Druck liegt bei maximal etwa 1757 atü, vorzugsweise
<984atü, insbesondere <422atü; gut arbeitsfähig ist
ein Druck zwischen etwa 70 und 843 atü. Die genannten Drucke stellen den Gesamtdruck von Wasserstoff und
Kohlenoxiden dar. Bei einer bevorzugten Ausführungsform des erfindungsgemäßen Verfahrens wird der
Katalysator in dem flüssigen Reaktionsmedium gelöst gehalten.
Die Reaktionszeit liegt zwischen einigen Minuten und mehreren Stunden, z. B. bis etwa 24 Stunden.
Die relativen Mengen an Kohlenoxid und Wasserstoff zu Beginn der Reaktion können sehr unterschiedlich
sein. Im allgemeinen beträgt das Molverhältnis CO : H2
etwa 20 : 1 bis 1 : 20, vorzugsweise etwa 10 : 1 bis 1 : 10, insbesondere etwa 5 : 1 bis 1 :5. Anstelle von Kohlenmonoxid
und Wasserstoff können auch Substanzen verwendet werden, welche unter den Reaktionsbedingungen
zu deren Bildung führen, z.B. CO2 + H2 oder CO2 + CO + H2 oder gegebenenfalls Wasserdampf und
Kohlenmonoxid.
Bei dem erfindungsgemäßen Verfahren können entweder heterogene oder homogene Reaktionsmischungen
verwendet werden; so eignen sich gelöste Katalysatoren oder feste Katalysatoren in Form von
Suspensionen oder auch aufgebracht auf porösen Trägern, wie Aluminiumoxid, Siliciumaluminiumoxid,
Kieselgel, Aktivkohle, Titanoxid, Zirkoniumoxid, Zeolithe wie Molekularsiebe, Bimsstein, Kieselgur oder
Kationenaustauscherharz.
Die aktive Form des Katalysators kann verschieden hergestellt werden. Der Katalysator kann vorgebildet
sein oder es werden rhodiumhaltige Substanzen und die Gegenion bildenden Substanzen in die Reaktionszone
gegeben und unter den Arbeitsbedingungen in Anwe-
senhcit von Wasserstoff und Kohlenmonoxid der aktive
Katalysator in situ erzeugt.
Nach der Erfindung wird der Katalysator zweckmaßigerweise in dem Lösungsmittel hergestellt, indem
Tetrarhodiumdodecacarbonyl — obwohl es nur begrenzt löslich ist — in feinteiliger Form zu dem Lakton
gegeben wird. Anstelle von Rh4(COJi2 kann auch eine
beliebige andere rhodiumhaltige Verbindung verwendet werden. Es können auch organische Liganden, wie
2-Hydrcxypyridin, oder andere Gegenion bildende Verbindungen dazugegeben werden. Die Bildung des
Klusters erfolgt gegebenenfalls in Anwesenheit von H2 unter einem CO-Druck von etwa 1 bis 15 ata bei einer
Temperatur von etwa 30 bis 1000C während einer Dauer von einigen Minuten bis zu einigen Tagen, im
allgemeinen von etwa 30 min bis zu 24 h. Dabei können zweckmäßig etwa 0,1 bis 20 Mol der Gegenion
bildenden Verbindungen pro Mol Rhodium verwendet werden.
Die folgenden Beispiele dienen zur Erläuterung der Erfindung.
Beispiele! bis 11
Ein 150-ml-Reaktionsgefäß aus rostfreiem Stahl für
einen Druck von 7000 ata wurde mit einem Vorgemisch aus 75 cm3 Lösungsmittel, 3,0 mMol (0,77 g) Rhodiumdicarbonylacetylacetonat,
10 mMol destilliertem 2-Hydroxypyridin und gegebenenfalls dem angegegebenen Salz beschickt, verschlossen und mit COh-H2 (1 : 1 molar)
auf den in der Tabelle angegebenen Druck (atü)
gebracht, auf 1900C erwärmt und CO + H nachgespcist.
Die Temperatur wurde 4 h bei 2200C gehalten und CO+ H2 nachgespeist, wenn der Druck um etwa 35 atü
unter den gewünschten Reaktionsdruck sank, um den Druck während der gesamten Reaktionszeit nur um
28 atü schwanken zu lassen.
Nach diesen 4 h wurde auf Raumtemperatur abgekühlt, der Überdruck abgeblasen und die Reaktionsmasse
ausgetragen. Durch gaschromatographische Analyse
in (Hewlitt Packard FM™ 101) wurde eine Probe von 2 μΙ
bestimmt, die nach 2 min bei 500C mit 15grd/min von 50
auf 2800C erwärmt wurde.
Die aus dem Reaktionsgefäß gewonnene Rhodiummenge wurde durch Atom-Absorptionsanalyse bestimmt
( Perk i η and Eimer Atom-Absorptionsspektrofotometer
Typ 303), und zwar bei einer Spaltbreite von 0,2 mm, einer Wellenlängeneinstellung von
343,5 nm unter Verwendung einer Rhodium-Hohlkathodenlampe
als UV-Quelle und einem Verdünnungskalalysator von 100 : I für das Lösungsmittel (0,08 Gew.-%
Triphenylphosphin in Äthylenglykolmonomethyläther) bezogen auf die Probe. Die wiedergewonnene Rhodiummenge
ist der Prozentsatz des noch in der Reaktionsmasse gelösten oder suspendierten Rhodiums,
bezogen auf eingesetztes Rhodium.
Die aus der Waschflüssigkeit des Reaklionsgefäßes gewonnene Rhodiummenge bezieht sich auf 100 cm'
Lösungsmittel, die im Reaktionsgefäß in Gegenwart von CO + H2 (CO : h2 = 60 : 40) unter einem Druck von etwa
ω 843 bis 1054 atü 30 min auf 160°C erhitzt wurden.

Claims (1)
- Patentanspruch:Verfahren zur Herstellung von Alkoholen, deren Äther, Ester und Oligomeren durch Umsetzung von Kohlenoxiden und Wasserstoff unter einem Druck von etwa 70 bis 3515 atü und bei einer Temperatur von etwa 100 bis 3750C in Gegenwart eines Rhodiumcarbonyl-Komplexes als Katalysator, der im Infrarotspektrum intensive Banden bei etwa 1868±10cm-', etwa 1838±10cm-' und etwa 1785±10cm-' unter einem Druck von wenigstens etwa 35 atü zeigt, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man die Umsetzung in y-Butyrolakton oder ό-Valerolakton als Lösungsmittel durchführt.
