normale Säuren. Geringe Mengen verzweigtkettiger Säuren, bis zu ungefähr 1O#, können ohne schädliche Wirkung toleriert
werden. *
Die synthetischen Ester werden in der Weise hergestellt,
daß man das Polyolgemisch und Säuregemisch im geeigneten Verhältnis mischt und das Gemisch Veresterungsbedingungen
unterwirft. Es sollten genug Säureäquivalente in dem Säure-

^ gemisch vorhanden sein, um wenigstens im wesentlichen die
gesamten Hydroxylreste in dem Eolyolgemisch zu verestern.
Es wird im allgemeinen ein geringer Überschuß an Säuregemisch verwendet, obwohl ein großer Überschuß nicht zu
empfehlen ist, weil er nach Beendigung der Veresterung entfernt werden muß, sonst weist das Produkt eine zu hohe
Säurezahl auf. Das Entfernen großer Mengen nicht umgesetzter
Säuren ist nicht wirtschaftlich und ebenso wegen Emulsionsbildung
schwierig· Im allgemeinen werden 1 bis 1,25 Äquivalente Säuregemisch für jede Hydroxyläquivalente des
Polyolgemischs verwendet.
Wie vorausgehend festgestellt, werden die Ester dadurch
hergestellt, daß man das Polyol-Säuregemisch Veresterungsbedingungen unterwirft. Unter Veresterungsbedingungen ist
zu verstehen, daß die Reaktion unter dem Fachmann bekann-■
ten Bedingungen durchgeführt wird, um eine organische Carbonsäure und einen Alkohol zu veranlassen, einen Ester
durch Abgabe eines Moleküls Wasser zu bilden. Dies wird im

allgemeinen durch Erhitzen des Gemische, das die organische
Garbonsäure und den Alkohol enthält, beschleunigt. Hierzu wird ein Temperaturbereich von ungefähr 75 bis
2500O verwendet. Vorzugsweise wird die Reaktion bei einer
Temperatur durchgeführt, die hoch genug ist, die Destillation des gebildeten Wassers zu bewirken, aber nicht so
hoch ist, daß «in Abbau der Reaktionspartner oder Produkte
bewirkt wird. Häufig wird die Entfernung des Wassers da— ä
durch erleichtert, daß man ein Wasser-unlösliches azeotröpes
Lösungsmittel dem Reaktionsgemisch einverleibt. Zu den
hierzu geeigneten Lösungsmitteln gehören aliphatische oder
aromatische Kohlenwasserstoffe. Die aromatischen Kohlenwasserstoffe
wie Benzol, Toluol, Xylol, Mesitylen und dergleichen sind besonders zweckmäßig. Werden diese verwendet,
wird die Veresterung im allgemeinen bei dem Siedepunkt des
Gemische durchgeführt und das Wasser aus dem Destillat mittels Ehasenabtrennung abgetrennt. Das Lösungsmittel wird
zu dem Reaktionsgemisch zurückgeführt, bis die Veresterung
beendet ist. Wenn höhere Temperaturen bei Verwendung eines
azeotropen Lösungsmittels gewünscht werden, kann die Reaktion
unter einem solchen Druck durchgeführt werden, der
ausreichend ist, den Siedepunkt des Gemischeauf die gewünschte Reaktionstemperatur zu heben.

Die Vereaterungsgeschwindigkeit wird ebenso durch Zugabe
eines Veresterungskatalysators zu dem Gemischerhöht. Be-

sonders geeignet sind Säurekatalysatoren. Zu diesen Katalysatoren
gehören Schwefelsäure, Phosphorsäure, p-Toluolsulfonsäure,
Natriumbisulfat, Kaliumbisulfat, sulfonierte
Pplystyrolsäureaustauscherharze und dergleichen. Zu weiteren
brauchbaren Katalysatoren gehören Ester von Titan
und Zirkonium wie Tetraalkyltitanate oder -zirconate (zum
Beispiel Tetraäthyltitanat, Tetrabutyltitanat, Tetra-npropylzirconat,
usw.)· Ebenso können Metalloxide wie Zinkoxid, Aluminiumoxid und dergleichen verwendet werden. Die
Katälysatormenge ist nicht kritisch, sollte aber groß genug
sein, um als Promotor für eine vernünftige Veresterungsgeschwindigkeit zu dienen. Ein brauchbarer Bereioh ist von
0,001 bis 5 Gew.#, bezogen auf das Gewicht des Reaktionsgemischs,
und eine bevorzugte Katalysatorkonzentration liegt im Bereich von 0,1 bis 3 Gew.#·
Die Veresterung wird durchgeführt, bis die Hydroxylzahl
des Gemische unter ungefähr 5 verringert ist.. Danach wird
der Ester verschiedenen Behandlungen zum Entfernen unerwünsohten
Materials unterworfen. Lösungsmittel oder ßber*-
schüsse an aliphatischen Carbonsäuren können dadurch entfernt werden, daß man den Ester, vorzugsweise unter Vakuum»
auf eine Temperatur erhitzt, die hoch genug ist.; sie zum
Ausdestillieren zu veranlassen. Temperaturen von 100 bis 25Q0C mit einem Vakuum unter 50 Torr, vorzugsweise unter
10 Torr« sind gewöhnlich ausreichend.- Die rückständige Saure

kann durch Waschen des Esters mit einer wäßrigen Base wie
Natriumcarbonat entfernt werden. Man kann auch den Ester
zuerst mit einer wäßrigen Base vor dem Abdestillieren des Lösungsmittels waschen. Dieses Verfahren ermöglicht die
Entfernung von rückständigem Wasser mit dem Lösungsmittel. Weiterhin kann das Trocknen des Esters durch Behandlung
mit jedem der bekannten Trocknungsmittel, wie wasserfreiem
Natriumsulfat, bewirkt werden. Es ist dm allgemeinen er- i
wünscht, das Esterendprodukt einer weiteren Behandlung mit
einem adsorbierenden Material., wie aktiviertem Ton, Aluminiumoxid oder Holzkohle, zu unterwerfen, um Spuren an
Säuren und anderen Verunreinigungen zu entfernen.
Obgleich annehmbare Ester unter Verwendung von Polyolgemischen,
die von 1 bis 2,5 Moläquivalente Trimethylolpropan
für (jedes Moläquivalent Neopentylglyeol enthalten, wird
es vorgezogen, daß das Polyolgemisch von ungefähr 1,5 bis
2,5 Moläquivalente Trimethylolpropan pro Molaquivalent '
Neopentylglycol enthält. Ester mit ausgezeichnet guten
Schmier—und Viskositätseigenschaften werden aus Polyolgemischen
erhalten, die von 1,5 bis 2,0 Moläquivalente Trimethylolpropan pro Moläquivalent Neopentylglyooll- enthalten.
Ein besondere bevorzugter synthetischer Ester deayvorlie—
genden Erfindung wird durch im wesentlichen völlige Veresterung
eines Gemische von Trimethylolpropan und Neo-

pentylglycol im Verhältnis von 1,9 bis 2,1 Moiäquivalente
Trimethylolpropan pro Moläquivalent Neopentylglycol mit einem Gemisch aliphatischer Monocarbonsäure erhalten, wobei
diese zumeist bestehen aus von 15 bis 18 Gew.# im wesentlichen normaler Pentansäure, von 20 bis 24 Gew. # im
wesentlichen normaler Hexansäure, von 34 bis 38 Gew.#, im. -.
wesentlichen normaler Octansäure und von 24 bis 28 Gew.# im
wesentlichen normaler Decansäure. ^:
Die Ester werden am besten durch die nachfolg^fnden
spiele in ihrer Herstellung erläutert. Alle !Teile sind Gewichtsteile, es sei denn, daß dies anders angegeben ist. .
In ein Reaktionsgefäß t das mit Rührwerk, Thermometer, Erhitzungsvorrichtung,
Dean-Stark-Wasserabtrenner ausgestattet ist und mit einer Stickstoffatmosphäre versehen ist,
werden 330 Teile n-Hexansäure, 330 Teile n-Octansäure,
330 Teile n-Decansäure, 82,4 Teile Neopentylglycol» 215
Teile Trimethylolpropan und 3^5 Teile Xylol eingebracht.
Das Gemisch wird gerührt und zum Rückfluß erhitzt· Es wird 21 Stunden am Rückfluß gehalten, während Wasser entfernt
wird. Danach wird es mit einer wäßrigen Natriumcarbonatlösung
gewaschen und dann über Calciumsulfat getrocknet.
Das Lösungsmittel und verbleibendes flüchtiges Material
werden bei einer Flüssigkeitstemperatur von 1OQ0O herunter
bis; zuv einem "Druck von 5 Torr'abdestiiliert. Der sich'ergebende
"synthetische Ester War' ein 'geeignetes Schmiermittelbasismaterial.. .-r-· "· - —·■ <-* -■"■ ■■"· ·■ "·'■ ' ' '; *" ; ■

In ein.mit Glas ausgekleidetes Reaktionsgefäß wurden
11,4 Teile Trimethylolpropan, 4,42 Teile Neopentylglycol,
2j8 Teile Xylol und 50 Teile eines im wesentlichen normalen
aliphatischen Monocarbonsäuregemischs eingebracht, das im wesentlichen bestand aus 16,7 Gew.% Pentansäure,
21,7 Gew.% Hexansäure, 35,8 Gew.% Octansäure· und 25/B' ■
Gew.$ Decansäure. Das Gemisch wurde (bei ungöi^äiir- 156 G) ·
zum Rückfluß erhitzt und 8 Stunden am Ruek-flti^ltiiM^en-j "
während kontinuierlich von dem Destillat Wasser entfernt - ■
wird. Die Endtemperatur betrug 24O°C. Das Gemisch wurde
gekühlt und 40 Teile Hexan zugegeben. Es wurde dann mit
16 Teilen !Obigen vräßrigen kaustischen Alkalien (caustics)
und ein zweites Mal mit 8 Teilen 1055igen wäßrigen kaustischen
Alkalien gewaschen. Zuletzt wurde es mit Wasser bis zur Neutralität gewaschen. Das Produkt wurde filtriert

Die Hexan-, Xylol- und flüchtigen Bestandteile wurden bei einer Flüssigkeitstemperatur von 1660C/15 Torr abdestilliert.
Das Produkt wurde dann filtriert und war ein ausgezeichnetes
synthetisches Esterschmiermittel mit den nachfolgenden physikalischen Eigenschaften:

Zur Herstellung- von TurbinensGhfflierinitteln unter Verwendung
der Ester dieser Erfindung wird'es vorgezogen, den
Schmiermitteln weitere Additive zur Verbesserung der Eigenschäften
zuzugeben. Zu diesen gehören Antioxidationsmittel,
Metallpassivatoren, Hochdruckmittel, Antischaummittel und
dergleichen. Ein Antioxidationsmittelbereich von 0,1 bis
5,0 Gew.# ist zweckmäßig. Zu bevorzugten Antioxidationsmitteln gehören: Phenothiazin, Phenyl-oMÜaphthylamin,
Phenyl-ß-naphthylamin, Dioctyldiphenyiamin, N-Alkylphenothiazine,
Dipyridylamin, 5-ithyl-10,10-diphenylphenazasilan,
3 *7-Dialkylphenothiazine, Diphenylamin, Dinaphthylamin,
Butyl-a-Naphthylamin, Ditolylamin, Phenyltolylamin,
Tolylnaphthylamin, Dicyclohexylamin, Diphenyl-p-^)henylendiamin,
^tert-Butylcatechol, 2,6-Di-tert-butyl-p-cresol,
Hexylgallat, Tri-nonylphenylphosphit, polymerisiertes
Trimethyldihydrochinolin., ρ,ρ'-Dioctyldiphenyiamin, Octylphenyl-ß-naphthylamin,
Octylphenyl-äi-naphthylamin, p-Aminodiphenylamin,
o-Aminophenol, Hydroxydiphenylamin, Dodecylanilin,
J-Pentadecyl-^-aminophenol, 1O-Methyl-3,7->diQctylphenothiazin,
lOHQ-Octyl-SiV^ölioctylphenothiazin, 10-Phenyl-5«7-dioctylphenothiazin,
10-Tolyl-3,7-dioctylphenothiazin,

2,0 Gew.% verwendet. Zu zweckmäßigen Metallpassivatoren '
gehören: 1,4-Dihydroxyanthrachinon, 1-Salicylalaminoguanidin,
Benzotriazol, Benzimidazol, Butylbenzothiazöl, Methylen-bis-benzotriazol, C^^/jo aliphatische carbocyclische
Salze von I-Salicylolaminoguanidin, Polybydroxyanthrachinon,
N1N'-Disalicyliden-1,2-propandiamin, N, If' Disalicyliden-112-äthandiamin,
Chinizarin, Alizarin ·
Hochdruckmittel werden in Konzentrationen von 0,1 bis 5»0-Gew.Ji
verwendet. Typische Hochdruckmittel sind die Ester von Säuren des Phosphor, einschließlich Triarylphosphaten
wie Triphenylphosphat, Trieresylphosphat, Phenyldicresylphosphat,
Tritolylphosphat und die Tri-alkylphosphat© und
-phosphonate wie Tri-n-butylphosphat, Tri-(2-äthylhexyl)-phosphat,
Trimethylcyclohexylphosphat, Tributylphosphonat, Tri-(ß-chlorisopropyl)*phosphonat und dergleichen«
Silicone wie Dimethylsilicon, Diäthylsilicon und dergleichen
werden in geringen Mengen von ungefähr 1 bis 50 ppm
aur Inhibierung der Schaumbildung verwendet.
Die nachfolgenden Beispiele erläutern das Mischen typischer

- 2. Synthetische Ester nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß das. Molverhältnis im Bereich von 1,5. bis 2,0 Mol-Äquivalenten an Trimethylolpropan für jedes Möl-Äquivalent von Neopentylglycol liegt und die Säuremischung in der Hauptsache aus von 17 bis 28 GewV? im" ■ wesentlichen normaler Hexansäure, von 35 bis 42 Qevt*% im wesentlichen normaler Octansäure und von 35 bis 45 im wesentlichen normaler Decansäure besteht«INSPECTED- 19 -
- 3. Ester nach Anspruch I9 dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß das erwähnte Molverhältnis imBereich von 1,5 bis 2,0 Mol-Äquivalenten, von Trimethylplpropan für jedes" Mol-Äquivalent von Neopentylglycpl liegt.
- 4-, Ester nach Anspruch 3, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die erwähnte Säuremischung in der Hauptsache aus von 17 bis 28 Gew.% von im wesentlichen normaler Hexansäure von 35 bis Hz Gew. % von im wesentlichen normaler t)ctansäure und von 35 bis *t5 Gew^ von i^i wesentlichen norma ler Decansäure besteht.
- 5. Verwendung der Ester nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 4 als Schmiermittel, insbesondere für Strahltriebwerke.
