Es ist bekannt, daß sich Phosphin in Abwesenheit von Säuren nicht mit Aldehyden, ζ. B. neutraler Formalinlösung,
umsetzt (N. L. Paddok, Chemistry and Industry, 1955, S. 901); erst bei Zugabe von Halogenwasserstoffsäuren
erfolgt Umsetzung zu Tetraoxyalkylphosphoniumhalogeniden, z.B. [(HOCH2)4P]C1
(Hoffmann, Journ. Am. Chem. Soc, 1921, S. 1684) und [(CH3CH(OH))4P]Br (Messinger, Ber. 21,
S. 334).
Es ist ferner bekannt, Tetraoxymethylphosphoniumhydroxyd
durch Umsetzung von Metallphosphiden mit Aldehyden in saurem Milieu durch nachträgliche Zugabe
von Metallhydroxyden darzustellen. Diese Verfahrensweise hat jedoch den Nachteil, daß die Reaktionslösungen
durch große Mengen an Metallsalzen verunreinigt sind, die insbesondere bei der Isolierung
des zugrunde liegenden Phosphoniumhydroxyds durch umständliche und zeitraubende Fällungen und Filtrationen
beseitigt werden müssen.
Es wurde nun gefunden, daß sich Tetraoxymethylphosphoniumhydroxyd dadurch herstellen läßt, daß
man 1 Mol Formaldehyd, vorteilhaft in Gegenwart von Wasser, mit 1U Mol Phosphin in Gegenwart geringer
Mengen von festen Metalloiden der III. bis VII. Gruppe des Periodensystems und/oder ihren Verbindungen,
die mit Phosphin reagieren können, und/ oder ihrer Phosphinreaktionsprodukte umsetzt.
Als feste Metalloide der III. bis VII. Gruppe des Periodensystems bzw. ihrer Verbindungen, die mit
Phosphin reagieren können, oder ihrer Phosphinreaktionsprodukte seien beispielsweise genannt: Jod,
Arsen (III)-chlorid, Borfluorwasserstoffsäure, Kieselfluorwasserstoffsäure, Antimon(III)-chlorid, Schwefelchlorür,
unterphosphorige Säure und Selendioxyd.
Die festen Metalloide bzw. ihre Verbindungen werden im allgemeinen in möglichst feinverteilter Form
eingesetzt. Es ist auch möglich, sie in kolloidaler Form zu verwenden. Vorteilhaft ist ihre Anwendung
in Form von mehr oder weniger löslichen Verbindungen, wie Salzen, z. B. Halogeniden, Sulfaten, Nitraten
oder Doppelsalzen, basischen Salzen, Hydroxyden und unter Umständen auch Komplexsalzen oder Oxyden,
soweit sie sich mit Phosphin umsetzen lassen. Im allgemeinen erleiden diese Metalloide bzw. ihre Verbindungen
bei der Reaktion durch das Phosphin eine Veränderung, d. h. daß sie offensichtlich mit dem
Phosphin — in noch nicht sicher aufgeklärter Weise — reagieren. Es hat sich ferner ergeben, daß auch Reaktionsprodukte
von Phosphin mit feinverteilten Metalloiden oder insbesondere ihre Verbindungen die Umsetzung
des Phosphine mit Formaldehyd neutralisieren können. Diese letztgenannten Verbindungen können
auch niedergeschlagen auf Trägern wie Kieselgur oder Bimsstein oder in kolloidaler Form eingesetzt

werden. Es können auch Mischungen aus festen Metalloiden, ihren Verbindungen oder ihren Phosphinreaktionsprodukten
eingesetzt werden.
Die Durchführung der schwach exothermen Reaktion erfolgt vorteilhaft in Gegenwart von Wasser, gegebenenfalls
unter Zusatz von wasserlöslichen organischen Lösungsmitteln wie niederen aliphatischen
Alkoholen oder cyclischen Äthern, z. B. Äthanol oder Dioxan, bei gewöhnlicher, schwach erniedrigter oder
erhöhter Temperatur, also zwischen etwa —10 bis
+40° C, gegebenenfalls unter Druck und unter möglichst intensivem Rühren zwecks guter Verteilung des
eingeleiteten Phosphine.
Der pH-Wert der Mischung aus Formaldehyd, der
auch in polymerer Form eingesetzt werden kann, und dem Katalysator liegt vor Beginn der Umsetzung, je
nach der Natur des eingesetzten Katalysators, zwischen etwa 4 und 8. Bei der Phosphineinleitung steigt
der pH-Wert dann auf etwa 8 bis 8,5.
In 1 Mol Formaldehyd wird 1Ii Mol Phosphin, erzeugt
in bekannter Weise aus Alkali- oder Erdalkaliphosphiden aus elementarem Phosphor oder aus anderen
Phosphorverbindungen, eingeleitet, wobei die Einleitungsgeschwindigkeit der wechselnden Wirksamkeit
des jeweiligen Katalysators anzupassen ist, um vollständige Umsetzung zu erreichen.
Das schwach alkalisch reagierende Tetraoxymethylphosphoniumhydroxyd
konnte bisher aus den entsprechenden Salzen nur in umständlicher Weise hergestellt
werden. Demgegenüber bietet das erfindungsgemäße Verfahren den Vorteil, daß hier das Tetraoxymethylphosphoniumhydroxyd
nach Abfiltrieren, oft vorteilhaft bei Zusatz von Tierkohle oder Kieselgur, als farblose wäßrige oder organische Lösung anfällt

Claims (1)

Die Reaktion verläuft Verfahren zur Herstellung von Tetraoxymethyl-unter schwacher Selbsterwärmung, wobei die Tempe- phosphoniumhydroxyd aus Phosphin und Form-ratur durch leichtes Kühlen bei etwa 35° C gehalten 20 aldehyd, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man 1 Molwird. Die schwach alkalische Reaktionslösung (pH des Aldehyds, vorteilhaft in Gegenwart von Was-etwa 8,5) wird von der geringen Menge des in ihr ser, mit 1U Mol Phosphin in Gegenwart von gerin-suspendierten Niederschlages durch Filtrieren befreit gen Mengen von festen Metalloiden der III. bisund das farblose Filtrat bei vermindertem Druck bei VII. Gruppe des Periodensystems und/oder ihrenetwa 30° C eingedampft. Man erhält 120 g Tetraoxy- 25 Verbindungen, die mit Phosphin reagieren können,methylphosphoniumhydroxyd als farbloses dickflüssi- und/oder von ihren Phosphinreaktionsproduktenges öl, welches in Wasser mit schwach alkalischer umsetzt.© 909 609/438 8.59
